Care home wanderers

Just went to see my family member in her care home. Lovely home - lots of residents with dementia. We were having a cup of tea outside together. I had a paper bag with some shampoo and other hair products in it. A resident wandered up, started drinking my tea and then poured half of it in my bag...!

I think this is unavoidable and I understand how it happens. The carers have explained that it is best to wait to for a carer to come and lead the resident away (this resident in particular can be unpredictable).

I just feel both a bit amused but also sad. The resident has no idea what she is doing and if you told her pre-dementia she would do this she would never have believed it.

Not sure why I am posting - perhaps just to get it out there and maybe see if anyone else has these experiences? My family member doesn't have dementia but needs 24/7 personal care - it's hard on her because she understands why people wander but it also makes her anxious.

I find this is all very sad. I just don’t think I would want to be around in that condition. Most people who have dementia are not happy.
