Hi. My aunt is in a care home and no longer able to go home. We need to sell her home to pay for her care. She was in a terrible care home where they weren't looking after her properly so we moved her to a better place but means we have to pay as we go rather than waiting for when she passes away.

Her home is empty and needs a new roof etc so the longer it stays empty and cold, the worse the problems will be. We are just waiting for the LPA to come through but she will still need to agree. She is incredibly independent and can be very stubborn She has dementia so not sure how we are going to be able to convince her it's the right thing to do. To answer the obvious question, she does still have capacity some of the time so the LPA is valid

Social Care would force her to sell the house to pay for her care as she has assets. I agree it is awful, we had to sell PIL home when both of them needed to go into care as they were no longer well enough or safe to be at home. They are self funding in a lovely home where they are well cared for which is costing £86k a year and what is left from their house sale will last them another 18 months or so. Once the money is gone they will likely be forced into a Council funded home which is likely to be not as nice. My Mum was also forced to sell her childhood home when my Granny needed care.

So maybe I say, there isn't a choice? I know that the council will sometimes pay the bill sometimes and then it's settled after her death but that will be even worse as the asset will have depreciated further
