Trying to help 90DGF with benefit eligibility etc.

Based on this recent optometrist report should I request a CVI and register as sight impaired?

Dry age-related macular degeneration, both eyes
Visual Acuity 6/12 right eye, 6/6 left eye
Moderate nuclear sclerosis is present in both eyes.
Signs of retinal pigment epithelial atrophy are present right macula.
Mild pigmentary changes are present at the left macula.
OCT was done which shows a disrup inner segment/outer segment junction layer at the foveal centre in the right eye.

There are strict criteria for registering sight impaired/severely sight impaired. My FIL s vision is much worse than this and even he isn't severe and you need to be severe to get certain benefits also it is a hospital consultant who has to do the decision/register so he would need to be referred. Even with sight impaired you don't get help with TV licence etc.

My FIL has wet macular degeneration and his vision is also significantly worse than this, but his ophthalmologist told him he's classified as 'low vision' not 'sight impaired' or 'severely sight impaired'.

Your GF might still be able to be referred to his local low vision clinic for practical help if he needs things like magnifiers. But, as musicaltheatremum says, there are specific criteria for registration as sight impaired and it doesn't sound like your GF meets them, though his consultant would be able to tell him for sure.

Speak to a charity like the RNIB for advice but usually the doctor doing the sight test would refer if the criteria are met.

I don't think hes eligable OP my vision is 6/36 and I'm only registered Partially Sighted.

Those are good acuities op. Only an ophthalmologist can certify someone one as sight impaired/ severely sight impaired and only if the meet the right criteria

Dm has severe visual impairment due to amd in both eyes(one wet, one dry). She qualifies for Attendance Allowance and BB, but already met criteria for the latter before diagnosis.

My Mum is certified severely sight impaired as she has 6/60 in both eyes. The CV1 gave instant eligibility for a blue badge (which is a Godsend), a tax allowance of about £1250 and a discount of 50% on her tv licence.
I had to ask for a referral to the consultant and that appointment took 10months (pre Covid).

I really appreciate this feedback. I don't currently have POA so everything is a bit arms length right now and it's helpful to know which avenues are worth pursuing.

What’s their peripheral vision like?

He may still be eligible for attendance allowance even without it.
