OP posts:
OwlBeGone · 21/02/2024 19:05

Yes but if they get certain benefits it's reduced/fully paid

Lifeinlists · 21/02/2024 19:05

Yes

cestlavielife · 21/02/2024 19:06

Yes. Exempt if move into care home and house is unoccupied

chattyness · 21/02/2024 19:07

yes

StopGo · 21/02/2024 19:07

Yes they do. Some may qualify for the single person reduction or council tax benefit. Some may be exempt through lack of capacity. Others may also qualify for help as well.

loudbatperson · 21/02/2024 19:08

Yes, but hey reductions if in receipt of certain benefits and/or below a certain income.

There are exemptions, for instance if the home is unoccupied due to needing a care home etc.

Daffodilsandsunshine · 21/02/2024 19:08

Yes, why do you ask?

greenbeansnspinach · 21/02/2024 19:08

25 per cent reduction if they are on their own. Discretionary exemption if “severely mentally impaired” encompassing a dementia diagnosis.

Bloomingdaffs · 21/02/2024 19:09

Yes. Unless there are certain circumstances.. They pay the same as anyone else.

Grotbag81 · 21/02/2024 19:09

Asking for my mum - thank you.

Do Pensioners pay Council tax?

Yes of course we do.

Colliemad79 · 29/07/2024 18:45

Yes

LBFseBrom · 29/07/2024 18:52

We also pay income tax.

happyinherts · 29/07/2024 18:56

With one state pension of £930 per month - no other income - we are paying £250 per month council tax.

I hope this isn't another pensioner bashing thread. Pensioners have worked and paid in often for 40 years. RR is taking away from pensioners and the disabled so she can have a spending spree for Junior Doctors, Teachers and Immigrant housing.

Please consider applying for Council Tax Reduction - have a look on your Council’s website.

They've refused it on the basis that the 'pot of money' goes to the more needy. I don't know who they mean, but hey ho...

CanelliniBeans · 29/07/2024 22:49

Depending on the local authority you can get quite significant discounts for being a single occupier and over the age of 80. My df only paid £150 a year once widowed and he had a good pension and own home.

happyinherts · 29/07/2024 23:08

Yes, that's for single occupiers, not for a mixed age couple where one is a pensioner - the other is over 60 and not in receipt of anything

You would qualify for council tax reduction based on this income. Only wouldn’t if you have savings over the threshold

QueenOfTheNihilist · 29/07/2024 23:51

Yes, unless they have ‘severe mental impairment’ - which can include dementia

I was thinking along similar lines. Please do go back to them and enquire further.

Did you apply for discretionary help that time? Council Tax Reduction is based on income and savings rather than a moral judgement. Sorry to keep on, I just don’t like to see people struggling, especially when they could be entitled to help.

Do you get pension credit? Should bring your income up to £332 a week (reduced if you have savings over £10,000), and would entitle you to other benefits, including reduced Council Tax and future winter fuel payments.
