…. 84, has always been in generally good health. She has become quite forgetful but other than that has been fine so it’s a bit of a shock.
She is having a CT scan today and seeing the stroke consultant tomorrow (doesn’t work weekends)
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I don’t have siblings and I live overseas.
My mum has fabulous friends and neighbours visiting and I have very supportive friends to help us out.
My mind and google search engine have gone into overdrive🤯
Can anyone offer any practical
advice/ pointers perhaps based upon your own skills and experiences and let me know what I can expect while I get my shit together to fly back to UK
Thanks

Sorry OP I have no experience but sending strength and hugs as this must be hard for you.

Hopefully someone will reply soon with more knowledge and experience.

I'm so sorry that this has happened. Hang in there but please don't google. You need to know what's going on and the nature of the stroke. The consultant should also explain what the implications are of the stroke. Try not to get ahead of yourself - easier said than done, I know.

It's great friends and neighbours are visiting. Having love and support around her is essential. It boosts morale and this can help her progress. Having their support for you is really important too. If you need to set up a rota for daily visits, you'll have enough people to share the 'work'. Depending on her situation - each stroke is unique and so is the recovery - you'd do well to make sure you get rest, and take care of yourself.

But a safe online place to go is the Stroke Association website and Forum where you'll find lots of support and advice from patients and family members. I'm using it a lot at the moment as my mum (77) had a very large stroke in February. We're in East Suffolk.

Deep breaths, and focus on getting yourself back to the UK.

Wishing you and mum the very best.

Sorry to hear this. My dad had a stroke 5 years ago, my mum had a kind of stroke 3 years ago, and I work for a stroke team.

What do you think your mum's priorities are in life? What would she consider important for her quality of life?

I would aim to talk to he consultant but also talk to the therapists - and I'd prioritise the occupational therapist above all.
