Book taxi without mobile phone

One of my elders is very independent-minded and keeps going into town by himself. He calls a taxi from his landline to take him but then can't get back. He doesn't have a mobile phone - would not be able to use one. He could get a bus but doesn't think of it.
Is there a way he can hail a cab, in a city that doesn't have black cabs?

How does he get back now then?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/01/2024 21:36

Is there a taxi rank? Or could he book the return journey when he books the outward one?

helpfulperson · 30/01/2024 21:38

Easiest way is to ask the same company to pick him up at a specific time. There are also really simple phones that operate no differently to a land line available.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/01/2024 21:40

Is there not a taxi rank in town?

Jeffjefftyjeff · 30/01/2024 21:43

does he go near a train station? Most have taxi ranks

ThePoshUns · 30/01/2024 21:48

He could go to the rank or a mini cab office?

SaltPorridge · 30/01/2024 22:04

Thanks for ideas. No taxi rank. He can hardly walk even with his frame. He has gone into a restaurant once and a shop once and they have called him a taxi. He caught the bus once.
I will try suggesting he have the taxi pick him up.

Some supermarkets have a freephone to call a taxi. I know of some Morrisons that do.

And hospitals.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 31/01/2024 11:19

Pre arrange the taxi back
carry the taxi number and ask someone to call for him. (I work in a shop and would and have done this in a heartbeat)
is there a retired person club in the town? In our town there is one with a community minibus and they often collect people/drop them home on set days.

BoohooWoohoo · 31/01/2024 11:22

I’ve seen phones for taxis in supermarkets but the easiest thing to do would be to prebook a taxi for a specific time and place.

margegunderson · 31/01/2024 11:22

Could he not use a mobile phone meant for older people? Doro covers that market - very simple, real buttons, loud. You could programme the taxi number in plus your number so it's dead simple.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 31/01/2024 13:02

I think they do some that are incredibly simple and only dial 3 preprogrammed numbers, with a single button press.

SaltPorridge · 31/01/2024 17:36

Thankyou for the mobile phone info but he really can't. I tried for years.
The carrying a card is a great idea, as people have been so kind, it would help them to have my phone number. I will set up an account with a taxi company too.
But most of all I will make sure he gets plenty of chances to go in with me or a carer, instead of feeling he has to go alone.

If he cannot use a very basic mobile designed for the elderly and infirm, and doesn't think about using a bus home...should he really go out unaccompanied? It sounds like it is time for the hard talk unfortunately. If you gave him an ultimatum of basic phone to never going out alone would he suddenly be able to use the phone? Lots of people "cant" until their freedom is impinged.

That reminds me - I made up cards for my dad with next of kin contact nos. on one side, and his meds on the other. Ambulance staff were terribly impressed. Credit card size, laminated. DH and I and grandchildren also had copies.

He’s coping. Freedom shouldn’t be curtailed unnecessarily.

Do you have access to dial a ride?

I second the simple Doro phone. This is a good one.

SaltPorridge · 01/02/2024 18:08

That is a good idea about the meds. I have made him a card with phone numbers, thought there must be something else.
I cant stop him going out!
Might have to get doro and make sure its charged.

Is his landline a fairly modern one? If so he will be able to use a doro, especially if he dials the taxi number by heart. The green "call" button and red "end call" button will likely be in a similar place to the ones on his landline.

SaltPorridge · 01/02/2024 21:13

yes i think so,
