Hi my dad has COPD and was hospitalised recently and diagnosed with aspiration
it was recommended that he has a stage 5 diet which is minced moist food ,however he still eats tender meat & toast & said apparently the Dr said it was ok once the meat is soft
Does this sound ok ? Does anyone know or have a stage 5 diet ? Any advice please

Im a speech and language therapist who used to work on the acute wards.

I'm assuming he was seen by someone like me?

You need to ring the hospital speech and language therapy department and ask for more information about what they saw, what they recommend he eats and whether it could change in the future. I'd Google the switchboard number and ask for the adult speech therapy department. The best time to catch them is likely to be some time between 8am and 845am, or sometimes around 4pm.

In general, people with COPD are at more risk of aspiration than average, but this is particularly the case when they have an active infection. So it might improve, but there may be some longer term issues.

Also in general, if you Google IDDSI level 5, you will read more about the diet itself. But I think you should talk to the therapist who assessed him.

Do PM me if you would like, but obviously I can't give any specific advice.
