My dad has been in hospital for a week now after vomiting and loosing weight. They have established that the vomiting is caused by an ulcer. While he has been in hospital he seems to have lost control of his bladder and bowels but only overnight. This has resulted in the nurses putting pads on him.

He is also refusing to eat anything but soup jelly ice cream and sponge puddings. He has full capacity. We have also noticed he has lost 2.5 stones over the last six months. Prior to going to hospital he had a good appetite and ate a range of foods. I'm so confused and nobody seems to be giving me any answers

Presumable his good appetite and the range of foods he ate was before he started vomiting? Maybe he’s limiting his foods as he is eating what won’t cause him discomfort/cause him to vomit?
Is he on painkillers that have a sedative effect? I’m wondering if that’s causing the nighttime necessity for pads?
What do you mean no one is giving you answers if they’ve said his vomiting is down to an ulcer? Do you mean you think there is something more going on?

Have you asked him if he is having trouble swallowing?

If your dad has been allocated to a consultant, get the consultant’s secretary’s telephone number and ask if she can squeeze you in one of his clinics to get an update on your dad’s diagnosis and treatment plan. That may be difficult this week with holidays of course.
The ward staff should be able to tell you what time the daily ward round takes place. Then you can go in (it won’t be visiting time, but I’ve never known the ward to refuse if you say you’ll sit quietly etc). and wait to nab the doctor doing the round when he reaches your dad’s bed. Be prepared with a list of questions and be concise. Also be prepared for the round to be massively delayed due to emergencies so take a good book, knitting or puzzles! Edited for typo!

There are loads of high calorie nutritional drinks that you can either buy or get on prescription for him.
Perhaps he'd drink those?

Thank you for your replies. The weight issue worries me more than anything. I will make an appointment to see his consultant but as you say it will probably be next week. He had an excellent appetite prior to this.

Ask if the nurses have weighed him and are keeping food charts, and ask for a referral to the dietitian.
