Pressure sores

My dad is developing a pressure sore due to his lack of mobility, and the nurse has recommended a water mattress to relieve pressure while in bed. My mum is worried because apparently these come with some type of machine that makes a humming sound and my dad is going to hate that.

I have seen these in Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Repose-Pressure-Relieving-Mattress-Overlay/dp/B012NRGERA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=134349342395&hvadid=605316182541&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1006593&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=11087297474757255373&hvtargid=kwd-385408365338&hydadcr=24864_2248297&keywords=repose+pressure+relief&qid=1701372618&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.23648568-4ba5-49f2-9aa6-31ae75f1e9cd&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

Does anyone know about these? or similar? Thanks!

I’m a nurse, yes I have used these on wards and the community. Can the community nurse not supply one for you?

hatgirl · 30/11/2023 19:38

If you are in the UK then the community nurse should be arranging the mattress/bed if they say it's needed!! Funded by the NHS as well.

Have they made a referral to the tissue viability nurses?

Thank you, my parents are not in the UK.

However they will get the mattress for free on their health service - the doctor is going to issue a prescription for them to buy one. That's how it works over there.

My mum is just worried that the water type one the nurse mentioned is not going to work for him if it makes a sound, so she has asked me to look for other type of mattresses that will work well, without the sound.

There’s not going to be an alternative. The mattress actively changes its configuration to alter the pressure pattern on the skin. So it needs a motor to drive this. It’s not an irritating buzz, nor is it continuous, it goes in waves. So at least give it a try.

AnnaMagnani · 01/12/2023 10:06

While pressure mattresses can be an acquired taste, noise from the motor is quite rare reason for disliking them.

A repose mattress isn't really going to be as good.

LivelyBlake · 01/12/2023 18:54

Thank you! I'll ask them to give it a try.

We had an Airflow mattress for our DD to prevent pressure sores. The 1st one we had was faulty and was noisy - the engineer came out and agreed. The replacement was fine. We had a baby monitor on in DDs room all night and I couldn't hear the replacement mattress - unlike the faulty one which kept me awake.

Munchyseeds2 · 02/12/2023 16:06

The mattress you have linked would be used before any sores have developed to try and prevent them

SeriouslyAgain · 02/12/2023 16:18

I think that all the mattresses used for prevention of pressure sores do have background humming noise because they need to be kept kind of 'inflated' at the right levels.
My mum is very sensitive to sound and she doesn't really ever seemed to have even noticed. So it could well be OK. It's really very 'backgroundy'

My Mum noticed the sound of her airflow mattress at the start and grumbled a fair bit about it. But it was that or the pressure sores. The type she had needed to go on a hospital bed style frame. Both mattress and frame were supplied free by a company working for the NHS. They require frequent checks and servicing, which again is free in our area and done by technicians visiting the house. Sometimes a wire comes loose, this makes an annoying beeping sound until fixed. But the pressure sores eventually cleared up and no more have developed. Worth a bit of inconvenience really, though it takes a bit of getting used to.

Just a thought, would some ear plugs help for the first few nights?

Mischance · 02/12/2023 17:51

My OH had an air mattress which was wired up to move about and change shape - the noise was very little and he slept through it just fine.

Hi, I work for a company that has a pump and electricity-free high-risk pressure sore overlay that many NHS authorities purchase for high-risk patients. I appreciate this is not a sales channel but please take a moment to search "Treat Eezi" via Dan Medica South Ltd. We have helped so many and are now selling worldwide as a class 1 medical device. Regards, Lynne

Thank you, I will take a look. All suggestions are much appreciated.
