To help my father wash and shave etc as my Mum cannot do it any more.

Probably a few hours a week.

Are there good agencies? Will ask GP for recommendations too.

Thanks

I don't know if there is anything nationally. You could ask at the GP and your local council.

sandletown · 30/11/2023 11:43

Facebook or next door app recommendations?

NetZeroZealot · 30/11/2023 12:01

I have seen a national agency recommended on here but I can't remember their name or which thread it was on!

Where abouts are you based OP? Worth checking out homecare.co.uk to see providers in your area and nationally - you can see their reviews and the services they offer

Thanks all. I posted on Facebook and was pointed to the CQC website, and one local provider in particular.

Try country cousins.

Your county council website or adult social services should have some info- but word of mouth is best.

You can make any link less mega by putting in the two [ then the link, then a space, then some text, then the two ]. Whatever text you put in acts as the link.

I’d do a Google search of what’s in your area and then look up reviews on Facebook and Google. Also the Care Quality Commission will have published inspections results for each individual provider, check that out too.

I would second Home Instead if there is an agency in your area.

They looked after my dad for two years and although not cheap, they were excellent with him.

My cousin also had them for his aunt who had dementia and he recommended them to me. Really pleased with the care dad got from them.

Word of mouth, and a self employed carer, rather than an agency, is what I’d recommend if you can. You can pay them properly (rather than produce profits for fat cats) and build up a good relationship with an individual who will really care for and about your dad.
There are downsides, such as relying on one person who obviously CouId fall Ill themselves, but good carers are often part of an informal network who provide cover for each other.
