Dementia and hospital stay

My FIL has been admitted to hospital today with a water infection. He finished antibiotics yesterday but deteriorated today and after a 111 call, ambulance was sent.
Found to have retained 850ml fluid in his bladder which needs to be drained so they’ve admitted him to frailty ward.

He also has dementia so wondered if anyone had any advice on the following:

He is supposed to self catheter but is increasingly refusing to do so, or forgetting or saying he’ll do it later- no doubt making the water infections more likely to occur. Any tips? Are they likely to discharge him still expecting him to self catheter?

and second q, he gets very distressed when he’s apart from my MIL- very upset, sometimes almost tearful. Any idea how they’ll manage it in a ward setting? Are they likely to try and sedate him or give him something to calm him down? It’s likely to be quite distressing for him, but also for others on the ward. Any time he is awake and not with her he’s like this

May be worth googling John's Campaign - if the hospital he's at is a participant they may have someone who can help.

Oh goodness. Is he still in hospital? Can you ring the ward and ask to speak to one of the doctors? It doesn't sound as if he should be expected to self catheterisation any more but I wouldn't guarantee that they won't discharge him.

Does he have a communication passport?
