Employing your own carer

Has anyone employed a carer directly and found a company who can organise pay slips / NI for them?

We use self employed carers so they submit an invoice for us to pay but then sort out their own NI & Tax. Is that an option you could try? It’s much less hassle.

We used a series of pairs of carers to look after mum and dad at home (both seriously incapacitated - needed feeding and everything). Supplied by a couple of different companies. If that's what you mean. I certainly wouldn't recommend employing carers directly yourself. Certainly not if the needs of the person being cared for are complex. You only need one to walk off the job and you're left high and dry. If you engage a company they have to keep the cover up. And you get some choice in who you get too.
It's an expensive and bumpy ride though. Good luck. x

Think this is the answer.

@faffadoodledo lots of people pay their own carers directly. Agencies aren't always ideal.

Honestly it depends on the needs. And whether you're up to being an employer. We tried the self employed carer route and it was a distressing disaster. OP I think was asking about more of a package, and I do agree that this is a softer route.

We used a care agency at first but after a couple of years, they had a change of staff and became very unreliable. We have a team of 3 self-employed carers now & they set up a WhatsApp group between them so they can try and sort out cover if one of them is ill.

That sounds fab

Speak to the local authority your parents live in, it's highly likely they will be able to signpost you to whichever organisation they commission to support people who use direct payments to do the payroll etc.

There will be a monthly fee to use them but it probably won't be very high and they can be a good support around advice on hiring/firing etc as well.

Look into direct payments. The Dewis website in Wales is a very helpful source of information.
