Vascular Dementia

My DM has vascular dementia and for the past few days she has been very poorly - she lost all strength and needed a wheelchair to get to the lounge in her care home, and felt very agitated, anxious and despairing. She stayed in bed yesterday and refused food and drink, saying this is the end.

We feared the worst but today she has got up, eaten and walked to the lounge; we are hopeful she will be OK for a while. It is as if the past few days with reduced mobility and increased agitation didn't happen.

Has anybody experienced the same with an elderly parent? We think the dementia has taken a step down but she has not behaved like this before.

My Mum goes through phases. Not same but she’ll be unresponsive and barely talk for several weeks. Then she’ll perk up and be back to “normal”. It’s like a step down but that somehow her brain works round it again

Thank you for reply @Daffidale yes same principle she's taken a step down and now carrying on.

This happened to with my dad. He stopped eating and it became quickly apparent he could no longer swallow. He died five days later. In the days leading up to stopping eating he was very agitated mad that continued right up to his death.
