Council funded care and moving

Just wondered if anyone has any experience of the following please?

MIL is in an assisted living flat fully funded by her local council. Her Alzheimer's is getting worse and it's highly likely at some point in the near future they won't be able to continue to meet her needs and she'll need to go into a care home.

We live over an hour away and want to bring her nearer to us so we can pop and see her far more regularly.

How easy is it to move her care from one council area to another? Is it just a case of phoning adult services in our home area and asking them to assess her?

I think we should move her sooner rather than later, there is no similar assisted living set up in our area, and what she has now is very good but she is convinced everyone is hiding things from her and no one likes her and I do believe she would be better with more specialist care and us able to see her every day or every other day depending on work patterns.

To add, my elderly parents are both nearby us. My dad in a council funded care home and my mum living alone in their marital home but increasingly frail. So we have our hands full and the 2 hour plus round trip to see MIL really troubles my DH when he sees how much I am able to do to support my parents even though we both work full time.

If I were you I'd speak to Adult Social Services in the area where your MIL is now & tell them you are keen to get her moved nearer to you and go from there.

I think it might be your MILs current council who have to pay, even if she moves. The people to ask really are the AgeUK helpline.
