Has anyone’s relative had a aortic aneurysm!
my relatives is now 6cm but he’s too frail for an op . I appreciate that this isn’t a medical forum but I’m just wondering if anyone has been through this

No but you do have my sympathy. Do they know? Are they making any plans?

(1) Family member (74 then) had the op’ in 2021. Huge surgery and totally successful. Long recovery due to post op’ pneumonia and then Covid but all great now. Long scar all healed well. Back to full health and activities.

(2) My school friend’s father had one for years and years. He finally passed away in a retirement home aged 107 years, for reasons of old age.

So it is possible to live with it but whether it bursts (and patient bleeds out) is luck of the draw.

I am so sorry you are troubled in this way. I hope that whatever decisions are made, all will be well.

My dad had one when he was 70. He had the op and was up and about the next day. He recovered really quickly.

Yes, my DF80 has one, can't have the op as he has comorbidities. Other than having his driving licence revoked, he's been told to live life as normal. He knows he won't live forever and has come to terms with it.

Happy to chat if you need support, it was a shock to our family when first diagnosed, but there's nothing we can do.

That is truly amazing!

My dsis had one in her early 30s. They patched it up, but it went again (obvs. accurate medical terminology there😀). The second lot of work left her paralysed. She was very, very ill but did get several good years after this - including a spot on the Paralympic squad.

A relative of mine had a 15cm aortic aneurysm. He waited about 6 months with it before having an operation to repair it and then had no further trouble. He was 80 when he had the operation and lived another 16 years afterwards, dying of old age.

Trixieboo87 · 11/10/2023 08:46

Thankyou for your reply my relatives anuresyum is 6cm and the consultant informed us that once they grow past 5.5 it’s operation time

I appreciate that’s it’s a huge risk leaving it as itv could prove fatal at any time he’s very frail and has had a stroke he’s been through a lot I’m not sure that he’d survive
