POA - is anything posted out to the attorney?

Hello, hoping someone on here may know the answer to my question as I can't find out for sure on the gov.uk site.

My uncle is in the process of registering a power of attorney document with me as his attorney. I'm moving house soon but my old address is on the application. He's just been on the phone to me concerned that it will take ages for the address to be updated and any info/documents will go to my old address in the meantime. We will have mail redirection in place but probably only for a short period.

Does anyone know if confirmation/other documents will be sent out to me once the POA is registered? This is in England. If so I will need to extend the redirection probably. Thanks in advance for any info!

Currently, LPA applications are taking 4+ months to process. I really can’t recall if the LPA document came to my DH for him mum though!

I’ve been filling in this paperwork for a relative today.

When you completed the POA form, you would have chosen for them to send the paperwork to the donor eg your uncle or the attorney, eg you. So it will depend on who you picked.

Just been registered as my mums POA.
Yes I had at least 2 letters from them. The first telling me that I had been nominated and the second when I had been.apppointed

Thanks for replies, good to know current timescales. I (stupidly) don't have a copy of the form but my uncle will, I'll see if he can check.

Just redirect your post for 6 months - they really are besieged so best not to call up unless it’s really important.

Thanks, I will, the extra £20 or whatever is well worth it for the piece of mind.

Thanks everyone!

I can't remember what we put on my parents' form, but I definitely got a couple of letters from them over at least a six month period.

Yes, you get the original stamped forms. You need these to do anything- banks etc won’t accept a copy. Sometimes they need to be sent off special delivery. Very important to keep them safe.

Banks etc will accept a certified copy, stamped on every page by the certifying solicitor, financial advisor, etc. Best to get one or two certified copies and never let the original out of your sight. It may be safe while it’s in special delivery but you can’t be sure the organisation receiving it won’t lose it (or shred it).

I would do redirection for as long as you can. We moved relatively recently and did it for a year and you'd be amazed what turns up that you'd forgotten about or that only comes annually! We've ended up doing it for two years to make absolutely sure.

The people we bought house from only did a month's redirection and there is so much post they've never received as it's come to us after their redirection ended!

Extend your redirection

Not in my case. I did my POA myself online with two of my children as attorneys. I received the original stamped forms which I’ve stored in a fireproof box. My children know where they are. I have not yet had them certified although I know they will need this before they can be used. I have also scanned them into my lap top for safe keeping.

For my mum, she also received the original forms but I managed to intercept her post and get the copies certified immediately as we needed to register them with her bank to help her sort out some problems with her accounts. I’m glad I did as shortly afterwards I discovered that she had been tidying up her paperwork and had shredded some important things - like some share certificates, premium bond certificates and all my old school reports!
