Emergency call out carers

Hi

I live two hours away from my parents who are 80. My Dad is having an increasing number of falls and Mum is too fragile to lift him. Last time he wasn’t hurt but she called an ambulance to help get him up off the floor, which took hours.

They are in Hampshire. Does anyone know of a private care service when you can call for a cater at short notice?

thank you in advance

The local authority should have a link line / falls alarm service that will do just that. Easy to sort too.

This kind of service exists. We are in a different area but my parents use a service called ‘care call’. My Mum has a pendant she presses and two people come to help her up. They have a key coded box to access the house key. If you ring Age concern they maybe able to point out companies in your area who can help. It’s probably worth your parents being assessed by adult social services to see if there is anything else which can help.

This is brilliant - thank you both so much. As a result of your suggestions I’ve just found the Age UK personal alarms which which provide help 24/7 if he falls. Looks god value too. Thanks!

Can I suggest that you make sure that they have a keysafe because there's always a possibility that one falls and takes the other down with them leaving no-one to open the door. It will never happen right up to the point where it does.

I asked this question before
it seems many parts of the country have a service that does this but ours does not.

unfortunately I have had to call 111 a couple of times because I have had no way of checking she’s okay otherwise. Neighbours have helped lifting both her and dad. But that’s not risk free.

I hope you find something in your area but when you get the emergency button service, be clear what you get. Ours doesn’t have anyone official to call. It’s nearest people or ambulance if she needs one.

Thank you - yes upon investigation I realised the age UK call button only calls me and emergency services. However I have been fortunate to find a local cater who seems lovely and they work as a team of three, who have agreed to help on an ad hoc basis in an emergency

thank you everyone

Do you have to pay a retainer for the carers who have agreed to deal with emergencies? I’d happily do that but have only found one person, she is okay to be called in the night and then I pay for however many hours she stays. But she has a list of people so no guarantees she’d be around.

Not usually. Usually they call family

No they didn’t ask for a retainer which I would’ve been very happy to pay for, just £25 per hour when needed
