I lost my beloved mother last month. She had pretty much nothing in her bank and a couple of debts (around 2k).
After registering her death, I used the tell us once service and believed that this would inform the council and they would be in touch. It turns out her council bungalow is through a separate housing association and they weren't informed.
They are now assuming I will pay the rent for those weeks.
I know I should have checked more into this but I've been grieving and struggled to manage to deal with anything.
Does anyone know if they can actually claim this from me? There is no will, no official executor and as mentioned, no money in the estate.
Grateful for any advice.

Sorry for your loss OP. I wouldnt be paying for the rent and dont know how the housing association could actually charge you for it. I would maybe put it in writing that you wasnt aware of who the house was rented from and you informed them as soon as you became aware. I know when MIL passed, British gas were trying to claim a so called outstanding bill from DH. Even though there was no will or finances. He wrote a complaint letter / email, and it got written off.

They can try to make you pay. They might try all sorts to make you feel responsible.
Stand your ground. Not your personal debt to pay.

They cant make you pay (the estate is liable but you say there isn't any money so there isnt anyone who can pay). But, you need to inform them asap and return the keys after you've cleared the property so they can re-let it.

I would spend all weekend clearing it and return the keys on Monday. They are losing money the whole time they can't re-let it so you need prioritise giving it back to them ASAP.
