Forgetting to turn the gas hob off

DustyLee123 · 02/08/2023 21:25

DM has told me that she’s left the gas hob on by mistake twice now, and that’s what she’s admitting to !
Is there any gadget that can stop this happening ?

Swop out to induction?

ImInACage · 02/08/2023 21:55

I agree, I'd be looking at changing to an induction, so that even if it's left on, without pans on it, it'll turn itself off.

DustyLee123 · 02/08/2023 21:58

She’s got an oven/hob that looks like an Aga, so might be resistant to changing that, but I will try. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can get induction range cookers. That might help.

IwillwearwhatIwant · 02/08/2023 22:04

Set a reminder on a timer when she puts it on?

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 02/08/2023 22:30

Most gas hobs come with a safety feature that they stop releasing gas once the flame goes off, although usually takes a few mins. Also you can get plug in gas detectors that will alarm in the same way a smoke alarm does. Not the best but better than nothing if you can’t swap to electric

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/08/2023 22:50

Does she live alone or with someone else who does not do the cooking?

these work very well if there’s someone else who’s fit and well in the house https://sgn.co.uk/LCV

Locking cooker valve | SGN Your gas. Our network.

Our locking cooker valve is a simple safety device that is fitted to existing gas cooker pipework to stop the use of a gas cooker when you don't want it to be.

She lives alone. She’s leaving the flame on, it’s not gas pouring out.
‘Thanks, will broach induction today, wish me luck 🤣

Might be worth investigating something like this:

Having had a quick look they appear to be fir electric hobs only.

She will forget to do this. She’s getting forgetful too.

Thanks, will look at that.

If she's getting forgetful then a referral for local Telecare services would be helpful. They can provide heat detectors along side other pieces of kit (pendant alarm being the main one). There will be a charge but it's worth it for piece of mind.

You can see if your local fire service completes safe and well checks. They may be able to offer advice/ gadgets to assist.

DustyLee123 · 03/08/2023 11:45

She’s absolutely refusing to change the hob/oven. So I give up, but I’ve said that I don’t want to be told every time she does it.

You don't need to give up as she doesn't necessarily need to change her cooker. Look at that later two posts (one of which is mine)

Thank you so much for this thread! Came across it while considering changing our gas cooker to electric as my mother left the gas hob on (unlit) again. The third time this year and I finally thought I have to face it and do something as I don't want the house exploding.

Thanks to @Muchtoomuchtodo I've applied for a locking cooker valve from our gas network supplier as a first step. I've also discovered that new gas cookers have a flame failure safety device which is supposed to cut off the gas if the flame blows out, so I'll investigate that. Although she only uses the cooker for toast, so maybe an electric toaster will be less hassle.
