Does the current account count as savings as well, e.g. if there is £5k in it?

TIA :)

Do you mean as an asset to take someone over the £23k threshold? I'm sure it would otherwise people could simply transfer money into a current account. Am I misunderstanding the question!??

Yes. You need to provide a balance of all sums in all bank accounts and bank statements in support. Including current accounts.

@InDubiousBattle @DappledOliveGroves Ah OK, brilliant, thanks. Yes I was asking (clumsily) if current a/c was excluded from threshold.

Looks like parent needs so much at home care that their savings will rapidly plummet.

yes - absolutely every penny - bank accounts, pensions, savings, investments. And yes - home care and care home fees will really hit the balance hard.

If you're thinking of providing a live in / overnight carer - worth looking at care home.

Care homes can vary too. My dad was in a care home recently (residential not nursing)and it was £890 a week but that was the cheapest around, the one a short walk away was £1200 a week. In terms of home care we were quoted around the £20-25/hour mark so it really depends on how much they need. Also look at the flexibility of the providers, we saw some that would offer full hour slots only, others half hour ones. We viewed a flat in a supported living complex (it had a nursing home within the complex)which on the face of it was expensive but they offered 2 meals a day and care in 15 minute chunks which made a difference.

We found organising care for mum.and dad via social services saved money as we pay a lower hourly rate than we would with a direct contract with the same agency. SS do charge an admin fee but it's much smaller than the savings. Also the minimum visit time is shorter this way so we only pay for the fairly short visits mum needs rather than the longer minimum at a higher rate.
Whether there is a benefit will depend on lical contracts and needs.
