Who applies to REGISTER Power of Attorney?

I have finally got through the slow process of getting my Mum to complete the power of attorney forms. They are all signed by all the relevant people and we are now ready to register.

There is a choice in where my Mum (the donor) or I (the attorney) applies to register the POA.

What are the benefits of drawbacks of each person doing it?

For context - Mum isn't diagnosed with anything but her mental process has slowed down a lot and I will be taking her to the doctor... She doesn't have email or a mobile phone. I live very close.

The disadvantage of your mum doing it would be her losing the envelope when it arrives!

It's easier for you to have it sent to you as then you have it when you need it, rather than having to go round to hers, possibly in an emergency, and having to rifle through her stuff to see where she has hidden it.

Thanks for your reply.

She does pile all her post up for me to deal with so I don't think it would get lost.

I file all her things in the filing cabinet in her house which she doesn't touch as it used to be my Dad's and she never touched it then(!)

Do OPG ever contact the person registering it to update on the progress or to ask questions? In which case my details would be better as I have text and emails and answer my phone.

Are there any drawbacks with me applying to register?

I don't think there are any drawbacks to you applying and a lot of pluses.

Not aware of the OPG contacting anyone to discuss, just be aware it will be a very very long wait for the paperwork to arrive.

Thanks both. I will register it then. And send it recorded delivery.

I've put card payment so I assume they call up at some point to take that.

I am not going to keep a copy at the moment as I can't see any point - if it's lost we'd need to do a new form anyway. Or should I keep a copy?

I know it takes a very long time! Hopefully we won't actually need it for a long time!

Take copies before you post and be aware that recorded delivery goes in the main post and is not handled securely.
Special Next Day Delivery might be more secure as is signed for right along the route.

It doesn't take as long as you might think @Hmmph we got my mum's all sorted from start to finish within about 3-4 months (I can't remember exact timescales but I know we applied early this year and I have already been using it with her bank for at least a month or more)
I think previously there was a backlog because of Covid (that gets blamed for eveerything) but it seems they've caught up a bit now.
