Card for carer to use to pay for things

Hi, I wonder if any of you might have ideas for this. My parents have live in carers. I haven’t thought of a way to give them the funds to pay for things like online food shopping, hair cuts for parents, petrol etc. I don’t really want to give them my credit card details to put in the online shop websites etc, and they need a card for the other day things.

Is there such a thing as a card I could put limited funds in that they could use? And I could top up available funds that couldn’t be used above that amount as and when needed?

Thanks if anyone has ever organised that kind of thing

Prepaid cards? Not sure if you can set up for other named users, you’d have to check.

You could get a starling account and set up a "space" with a separate debit card attached, and transfer funds to that space. You'll see every transaction via the app and be able to top it up, etc.

I'm being spammed relentlessly by Santander about their careers card. Apparently just because I receive PIP. So they seem to be keen.

What about something like a monzo account which you can preload?

booface · 08/07/2023 22:51

Those are all super helpful ideas. Thanks very much for the links etc. I’ll check them out. Thanks again for taking the trouble.

So many pre pay cards out there, Tesco + is super easy to use and load money into. Post office also do a prepay card.

HanSB · 08/07/2023 22:55

Starling card, set up on your phone and their phone then you can transfer money over. You can see all the transactions on your phone. Ask them to keep receipts so you can keep an eye on things (they don’t sneak items onto a shop for example) and let them know an expected budget for expenses for the month

Thank you also for those extra suggestions. All great ideas

You can have shared jars on hyperjar but the carer may possibly need to apply for their own card and then you share the jar with them.

When mum had a carer I used to draw out £300 and put it in an envelope. They kept receipts and told me when it was gone so I could replenish

This. We've used one for our childcare. It's great and v easy to control.

Thanks again. What a fantastic board this is. I do really appreciate all the replies

I was going to suggest this. With starting you also get a notification every time there is a transaction.

That’s called a “standing imprest”. Grin I used to have one at work, so I wasn’t out of pocket for train fares.

Actually, it’s what I do for dad now. Pay on my card, keep a record, and top up from his account every time the ring fenced “dad” chunk in my account drops near zero. I was wondering whether to suggest something similar for a carer.
