I watched this last night, in honour of the late great Glenda Jackson. (It's a short film about a woman with Alzheimers who thinks her friend has gone missing, with a sub story about the disappearance of her teenage sister years before, but above all it's just a portrait of someone with dementia.) I found it really moving, and just wondered if anyone else has seen it and found the same? It so cleverly showed you how it might feel to be the person with dementia, unable to get a handle on reality, but at the same time showing you the situation from others' point pf view. Glenda Jackson's performance was amazing.

At the same time, it made me feel so desperately sad. My DM is (perhaps) now entering the early stages of dementia, and i already recognised little flashes of mum in a couple of the scenes. The insight into her possible future and feelings, and also into the experience of her daughter and granddaughter, was really devastating.

It was a very hard watch, but in the end I'm glad I saw it - it was upsetting, but also made me feel more empathy, i think. It's on iplayer if anyone hasn't seen it and wants to.

Saw it when it was on telly originally a few year back and then sat and watched it again on Thursday night. So fantastic and Glenda’s performance is staggering.

Oh I might have to watch this - didn't even realise it was a film. Loved the book.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 18/06/2023 08:43

The book was wonderful. Will look for the film, how did you watch it?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/06/2023 08:43

I didn't know there was a film. The book is brilliant.

I read it when DGM was just beginning to be a bit odd, and found it really moving.

It's on BBC iplayer atm (was shown on tv the other night, after Glenda Jackson died).

As OP says, it’s on BBC iplayer. I watched it again on BBC4 on the day Glenda died, they must’ve put it on as a tribute.

Glenda won the bafta for best actress in this.

I watched it last night. A wonderful film and marvellous performance by Glenda Jackson. However it made me concerned about my own future and how I may be dealt with if I start with dementia.

EmotionalBlackmail · 19/06/2023 09:23

I never even knew it had been turned into a film! I enjoyed (is that the right word?!) the book.

I watched it just today and it brought tears to my eyes. My Dad has dementia and is in a residential home so I related to it all. Glenda was amazing in it.
