Hi , my elderly dad has a stroke a month ago he’s 84 , thankfully no paralysis his faculties are fine but his mobility is the problem
prior to the stroke he was living on his own and doing his shopping etc
sadly we lost my mum during Covid .

The hospital are saying he needs to go into Neuro rehab and every week it’s the same reply when I ask and that’s he’s second on the list

we’re in London ahd while I appreciate that rehab is like gold dust and every clinic differs can anyone tell me what’s the average time scale please
Im so scared that he’s going to decline further for every day that he’s still in hospital
Any advice I have booked a meeting next week to discuss it and also dads progress

My mum's situation was different but she went into hospital with a suspected stroke and was waiting nearly a month before moving to rehab.

I think I would want to know what they expect rehab to achieve. Will he have the same level of independence when he leaves hospital or will he need a care package or even full time care.

It must be so hard not being able to see him and see the situation for yourself.

@Loopylou38 My Mum waited a fortnight in hospital after a TIA before going to a rehab place. She's been there almost a week & to my mind looks in poorer condition than 2 days after her TIA.

I honestly can't see her getting back home. ☹️

Thankyou for your replies , my dad has tested positive for Covid today which explains his fatigue the last few days
Im worried sick he’s been in hospital nearly 5 weeks now this . Im worried sick he’s so frail but he’s had all his jabs
I’m dreading visiting him tomorrow as I don’t know what to expect this could be the end

Hi , I went to see my dad yesterday he is in isolation and not well atall the Dr has informed me that he has no symptoms of covid well I disagree last week he was upbeat doing brilliantly with his physio and eating
This week he’s sound asleep in bed says he feels rough and only wakes to eat a bit and goes back to sleep
my sister went to see him today and she said his pad was saturated he woke up asking fir the loo I’m not sure that he realises that he’s wet the pad . My dads never soiled himself in his life so I feel he’s very unwell and that Covid has knocked him backwards .
I honestly thought that last week he was doing so well he also has a bit of confusion which the sister says is sometimes normal when and elderly person is sick she said no need for antibiotics as he hasn’t got an infection.

Im worried sick

My mum had a stroke a few weeks ago and although initially was doing well has had a number of other small brain bleeds and a lung clot. She is slowly deteriorated and has now moved into a care home. Have the scanned your dad for additional bleeds?

Loopylou38 · 22/06/2023 18:54

Hi I’m so sorry to hear about your mum it’s heart breaking 😢. My dad had an ischemic stroke the hospital have informed me that’s it’s not routine to perform further brain scans as he isn’t showing signs of another stroke .
may I ask how you selected her care home I’m trying to be one step ahead and have been looking at the CQC

We are in Scotland so maybe different. Currently she is in one found by social services on a six week assessment placement so we ate still looking for somewhere permanent. However my dad was also in a care home. Biggest thing is consistency of nice staff. If staff stay and agency staff come back its generally a good place to be. Look at staff interactions with people. At my dad's place it was clear that all staff including domestics and kitchen staff knew the residents, interacted with them and acted on problems. One day my dad (with dementia) was very upset at lunch and it was the kitchen porter who noticed he didn't have any cutlery so thought he wasn't getting fed.

My dads contracted Covid and been moved to a side room , I went to see him this morning & he has deteriorated laying on the bed curled up with no energy to even eat .
He was doing so well after the stroke now this

I’ve spoken with the Dr and they were doing bloods , urine sample and chest X-ray
Im worried sick
