How to get MIL help at home

MIL lives alone after FIL passed away in Feb. She's had a few falls, the most recent one causing a broken shoulder. GP surgery are being no help at all - she attended a few weeks ago and told them she was falling more often but referral was made to falls clinic or anywhere else. She has Type 2 diabetes and peripheral neuropathy in her feet which is not being managed. How do we go about getting her some help, e.g assessment of her home and necessary aids? Husband has called GP surgery today but they've just said to call back and join the triage queue at 8.30am tomorrow

Can you speak to the nurse? Or adult social care? They may be more use.

I would advise to call Adult Social Care in our area

Get in touch with your MIL ‘s local authority social care team. You should be able to Google it, and many LA’s have some sort of initial contact centre or even an online referral form to complete.
You really should get your MIL’s permission to take it further but a phone call asking for advice is fine.
Im sorry to hear your MIL is struggling, and you too.

And to be honest your GP is unlikely to be much help, and will still have to refer to the social care team.

I’d call the falls clinic direct and ask how you get on their list , same for home help if you want it to come from the state ? Same for any service you /she needs . Be a squeaky wheel . Good luck x

Adult Social Care. Going through simpering my own DM. You need a needs assessment and go from there.

Thank you everyone x

You might want to also consider getting your MIL an alarm I.e. a pendant. Then she can press a button for help if she falls again. Her local authority should have information on their website. Also Age UK have lots of advice and support

Adult social care are step 1 (forget the GP) but it will help if you have an idea of her finances ie is she likely to be self-funding or will she be funded. Also the usual - do you have POA, have you looked at getting Attendance Allowance for her?

Anyone have a recommendations for in-home elderly care in Cardiff? The agencies don’t get back to me, which doesn’t fill me with confidence
