In our area there is a rehab unit at a smaller hospital, with physio, OT etc onsite. There are also interim care teams/reablement teams who visit at home to facilitate care and mobility depending on needs.

I've come across it twice. Once was in a residential home with physiotherapists going in and once was in a purpose built rehab centre with occupational thereapists and physiotherapists on site, a training kitchen and an exercise room. I think it was up to a six week stay, funded by the NHS.

Thankyou for your replies I’m praying that the can help my elderly dad with his mobility
Are they like a hospital setting ? I’m just wondering how it works

My DM went to a rehabilitation unit after she'd broken her hip and had hip replacement surgery. She lived alone so couldn't go straight back home. The unit was part of a small local hospital. She had physio, including practicing steps/stairs and a full Occupational Therapy assessment - including visiting her home - to see what equipment or aids would be needed upon discharge (which they then provided).

Thankyou ohtowinthelottery that’s really informative I was wondering about the OT’s

My dad went into rehab, it was not perfect but way better than hospital. Completely focused on gaining maximum independence.

Thankyou for your reply , I’ve now been told that a referral has been done for rehab but it’s miles away my dad wouldn’t get any visitors

It really depends what is available in your borough/county and what the criteria for rehab services are. Rehab is about getting therapy- physio and OT. Sometimes it's inpatient (hospital type) setting or can be straight home with rehab at home. It isn't always therapy visits every day (might be rehab support workers) and sometimes there is a wait for therapy at home. Again, depends on the services in the area. Rehab as an inpatient tends to be more intensive and on a daily basis and you can normally still be referred for more therapy at home after this. Sometimes you may not meet the criteria for inpatient rehab as it tends to be for higher needs (ie needing assistance of 2 to stand). Once again, it depends on where you live! Speak to the ward OT or physio as they will do the referral re expectations. Drs don't always know the accurate details. Doesn't make sense you cant have visitors...Id ask why not

My mum is in hospital and is unable to stand up or walk. She's had a long period of reduced mobility so it's not altogether a shock. She has physios coming in to help her stand. On Monday the health care assistant got her out of bed and into a chair. She managed it for three hours before she buzzed to go back to bed. She needed a hoist for the return to bed but small steps are required. Yesterday they were going to get her to the shower. She will have to be much more mobile before she goes to the rehabilitation home where she'll be assessed over six weeks. Only then will she get home with a care package in place. She is already talking about going home and I'm having to be blunt about her capability to manage.

Hi , my elderly dad is being transferred to a Neuro Rehab clinic soon
Initially they had a bed available miles away which wouldn’t be in my dads best interest visitor wise

I was wondering if anyone has had an experience with Watford Neuro unit or Edgware please ?

Scoobydo87 · 31/05/2023 15:47

Sorry Holywell Neuro unit

Ah thank you for clarifying

Yes my dad is on the cusp of a borough in London , his GP is at a different borough so the Physio’s have told me that the doctors practice fund the rehab so he might have to have rehab in that particular borough which covers a large area which means he’d be miles away

Scoobydo87 · 01/06/2023 16:16

I thought that he’d be under the borough to which he pays his council tax and it would be that council that would fund rehab
sorry if this doesn’t make sense

Rapidtango · 01/06/2023 16:23

DM had 12 weeks in an NHS funded bed in a local care home after falling and fracturing a wrist. She was in general hospital for a week, community hospital for a week, then care home. There was a physio plan in place and the care home staff got her up out of her chair several times a day - elderly people lose their mobility very quickly if they just sit.

Scoobydo87 · 01/06/2023 16:44

Yes I agree about mobility my dad is now in the stroke ward I believe he receives physio once a day
I’m trying to find out who funds rehab his doctors practice or the council

Therapy rehab is normally arranged through the GP (whatever borough that is). Care/carers are arranged by the council (local authority) same as care homes. This is set up whilst being in hospital- is the funding elements of it

Scoobydo87 · 01/06/2023 17:00

Thankyou bowzen, my dads Gp is in a different borough and apparently the rehab centre wont be decided by my dads address but by the doctors address

Hope he recovers well!
You could consider changing his GP if is closer....check to see what the physio/OT say!

Scoobydo87 · 01/06/2023 20:09

It’s too late now just wish I’d known this I would have changed his GP to the borough that I wanted for rehab
