After a stint in hospital nasty lung infection, (previously had lung cancer and most probably back again) at home but deterioated alot, not mobile, relying on caters 4 x times a day. GP says in her experience, he will possibly go downhill further and probably 2 months to live. He's sleeping most of the day, very little food apart from breakfast cereal.

He's fairly comfortable and wont entertain going into a nursing home...he has capacity. GP says to keep him comfortable at home, has generated a respect form with DDs permission.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

My DF has been bed bound for best part of a year, eating, but not much, sleeping most of the time. I was told in Jan 2022 to get family to visit before it was too late. I presume he’s on the final lap, but nursing home reckon it could still be-a year or more.

IN MY WORKING LIFE, I HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE BEGIN TO FADE. IT IS VERY, VERY DIFFICULT FOR ANYONE, INCLUDING G.P.'S TO DETERMINE FINAL EVENTS. PEOPLE ARE VERY DIFFERENT IN PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH. ONE G.P. TOLD ME THAT A CERTAIN LADY WOULD NOT SURVIVE THE NIGHT. SHE WAS SITTING UP IN BED, EATING HER BREAKFAST THE NEXT MORNING. SHE LASTED A FEW MORE YEARS. IT IS A VERY SAD TIME. SO TRY TO DO WHAT YOU THINK IS RIGHT FOR THE PERSON. COMFORT IS AT THE FOREFRONT. DO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF ALSO......SORRY FOR CAPS. BAD EYES.

I'm sorry OP, it's so hard to say as every situation is different.

My dad at a similar age stopped eating and drinking. We thought he was on a kind of hunger strike, having been put into a nursing home where he wasn't very happy, but if you look it up online it seems that it's often involuntary, related to swallowing becoming more difficult etc.

Your dad's approaching the end of his life, and it might be quick or might drag out, and it might be a rough ride or a peaceful fade.

All you can do is appreciate each other while you still can. Sending you massive hugs, none of this is easy xxx
