Hiring a wheelchair

Hi,

I am hoping to hire a wheelchair for my DF whilst on a visit, for a couple of day trips, so he can enjoy it more than relying on his usual walking frame.
What kind of wheelchair would be best... a self propelled or transit one?
We intend to push him around in it, as he won't be able to use it himself, but not sure of the terrain we may be on. Google is not helping, so hoping someone who uses one can help!
Thank you!

Self-propelled, as long as you can fit the bigger wheels in the car.

It will give him that bit of freedom to just adjust himself, eg turn around or back up to see what someone's talking about, or pootle off down a different aisle of a shop.

Also the larger wheels and the fact they will probably be pneumatic will be a slightly gentler ride than small solid tyres.

Oh and larger wheels mean you'll be able to get him up small kerbs more easily: pull him up backwards, presenting the large wheel to the kerb.

Thank you so much for your reply. That's so helpful, I've booked a self propelled one. Sounds like it will male it easier for us both.
The red cross hire for a week, and can even deliver, so will be there for our arrival 😀
Just need to try and convince him to try a mobility scooter next...

Hope you have a lovely time out and about together!

Hi ninebiscuits, for your day trips in London with your DF, I recommend hiring a transit wheelchair from lendocare.com, which is easier to navigate and ideal for situations where you'll be doing the pushing.

We used their wheelchair hire service, and it was good!

Hey, for your upcoming visit with your dear friend (DF), if you're planning to assist him in a wheelchair for day trips, I would recommend considering a transit wheelchair. Since you intend to push him around and he won't be using the wheelchair independently, a transit wheelchair is typically more suitable. These wheelchairs are designed with smaller rear wheels, making them lighter and easier for a companion to maneuver, especially if you're unsure of the terrain.

Self-propelled wheelchairs, with their larger rear wheels, are better suited for individuals who can move themselves independently. Since this isn't the case for your DF, a transit wheelchair would be a more practical choice.

Hope this helps, and I wish you a pleasant and enjoyable trip!

We borrowed one from the local Shopmobility group up here in the Highlands for mum at Christmas. Gave them a good donation, no charge was made. Used a couple of times and invaluable getting mum about.
