Phones for the hard of hearing

I've tried so many different ones for DM who won't wear a hearing aid/claims her hearing aid doesn't work.

I have everything turned up to maximum volume and there are two new handsets in different rooms. Today she says she can't hear it unless literally sitting beside it.

Any recent for something that rings really loudly? Or is there some kind of amplifier device?

www.hearingdirect.com/collections/amplified-phones. Although you may be better with something that vibrates and flashes.

And if she's that deaf can she actually hear the phone conversation?

I bought DM one from Connevans and it's amazingly loud.

Not sure if it will be much use if your DM refuses to use her hearing aids though. Does she show any other capacity issues?

somethinginthewater · 10/01/2023 17:15

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime she seems to get most of the conversation ( though there probably is shouting involved...) but it does vary.

Does she have neighbours? Because it sounds like you are potentially going to make your DM make a nuisance of herself if you buy things that are excessively loud because she chooses not to wear a hearing aid.

Maybe she just does not want to wear her hearing aid, and is not bothered about the phone?

Really feel for you. My DM often insists on having new products which she then either can't hear or can't adapt to using.

She will ask friends and neighbours to get things for her, which is difficult as the items have to be returned.

@watchfulwishes genuinely no neighbours within a mile and she is very dependent on the phone. Has to be landline, she can't understand mobiles.

That must be so difficult, especially if she's struggling with the phone.

I'm guessing that she's reluctant to live somewhere more suitable?

Doro? I have one of their landline phones. I'm ok with mobiles so just have a standard mobile. But they do mobiles too.

If she can’t hear the phone ringing you need to look for a phone that not only has adjustable ringer volume , but one that has different ringtones. She may well be able to hear something high pitched and shrill , but not the base tones.

If she has a digital hearing aid you may be able to pair it with the phone so that her hearing aid does the hard work electronically rather than it being processed like any other external sound.

Thanks all, this is useful.
I did change the ring tone this afternoon, so that may go better.
I tried so hard to get her to move 15 years ago, even looked at other properties, but in the end she wouldn't consider it and now it's definitely too late.

Changing the ringer on a normal phone may work if you’re lucky, but they tend to have pretty much the same frequencies even if they are a different tune. Specialist phones have ear-splitting piercing rings that are pretty unpleasant for those with a normal range of hearing when turned up. Good luck
