My grandmother-in-law is nearly 100 and still lives alone in her home, which she owns.
Mentally she is still sharp, but physically she needs some help now, with most things.
She had some savings, but they have mostly gone now, they were spent on carers who come most days to help her get up and washed.
Are there any benefits she can apply for? There's a lot of equity in her home, but less than £3k left of savings.

If you've not applied already, she should be eligible for Attendance Allowance. Have you tried Pension Credits as well?

There's a thread on attendance allowance OP. Have a search.

Get a benefit check. Look on Gov.com under Pension Credit. Immediately claim Attendance Allowance. Should be entitled. When that is paid Pension Credit shoots up. Along with Pension Credit comes 100% discount on Council Tax. More COL help to people in receipt of Pension Credit.

That's great. Thank you. I shall have a look at all of these things Smile
I appreciate all of the help.

Has she had a care needs assessment for
Social services? If she's spent her savings on care and has gone below £23,250 (England) then the council will pay if they assess her needs as eligible.

Thingsthatgo · 03/01/2023 13:13

@uncomplicatedish I don't think she has, thank you.
Will the council contribute to her care, even if she owns her property outright?
I think the whole family have been so worried that she'll have to sell her home, that they've avoided looking into anything she could claim.

If she’s living in her home, its value won’t be taken into account in the assessment. The assessment will be based purely on her income and her savings.

It’s not until she leaves her home to go into a care home that the value of the home is taken into account.

Thank you so much. This is really going her help. My MIL (her daughter) was getting very worried.
