Elderly parents

Would you visit with a cold?

Well, obviously not, but at what point do you go? I'm under massive pressure to be there for Christmas but DS has been ill since last Wednesday. Over the worst of it (fever) but still runny nose and a bit of a cough. Me and DD just about clear of milder symptoms. DF is 91 and near end of life (judged to be about a month ago but no further decline as yet). I really don't want to give him a cold.
The pressure is from my brother, not my parents, if that makes any difference to the replies.

What day would you be due to arrive? If Christmas Eve, I imagine he’d be a lot better by then.

BeatriceLacey · 20/12/2022 17:21

Yes, fingers crossed he will be better by then. My brother wants me there now (so he can leave).

If he’s been ill for almost a week I would say it’s probably just left over symptoms and he wouldn’t be infectious now. I think I would leave it until Friday/sat to give it 10 days.

I would ask your parents. If your dad is 91 and end of life then they may choose to have you there. It is easy to say from outside but maybe you are trying to protect your dad from the inevitable.

Yes I'd go.

Thanks for the replies. My dad is clinging on and not ready to go. My mum's view is that he's got this far and doesn't want a cold to finish him off. Also DS loves his grandad and doesn't want to give him a cold (also autistic so extra anxiety). I'll give it another day or so I think.

You could all wear masks and be scrupulous with hand washing when you do see him
