I do a fair bit of batch cooking for my elderly dad and a few weeks ago, I bought some new food storage boxes from Asda.
On this occasion I made some chicken soup and also some meatballs, made sure both properly cooled down before putting them in the boxes and freezing them. When my dad tried the soup about 2 weeks later, he said he found little strips of plastic in the soup. He left one for me to look at and sure enough it was like little (very thin, almost plastic bag quality) plastic bits.
I was mortified and not wanting to take any risks, threw the rest of the batch out. I couldn't work out where it had come from but wondered if there had maybe been some plastic in the chicken carcass or something!
Unknown to me, there was still a box of meatballs lurking at the back of the freezer and dad found it, didn't realise, heated it up and lo and behold, found another plastic slither. Obviously, the rest of the boxes have now gone in the bin and I'll never buy them again but I'm genuinely perplexed as to what's going on.
- The food is always properly cooled before going in the boxes
- The instructions on the boxes don't say anything about freezing (so I assume this is ok?)
- Boxes are microwaveable
I can only assume that despite not saying anything on the label, you're not meant to freeze these boxes? And perhaps the combo of freezing and then microwaving is causing some weird splinters to happen?
I've complained to Asda and they said to take the boxes into the store but we've thrown them all away now. I'm going to try and retrieve one from the wheelie bin though as it may well be that this is a labelling/health hazard that Asda need to be aware of. It's just really puzzling me!
