Finger and hand use changing, deteriorating

My dm is in her 80s. She has always been very dextrous, knitting, crocheting, sewing etc until her eyesight got too bad. In the past year I have noticed that she uses her fingertips less and less. She seems to be picking small things up with straight fingers. She will close her hand around things in a normal way to hold them, but the picking up itself is straight-fingered. It's as if she's using the sides of her fingers and thumb, rather than the tips. I thought maybe she is losing sensation in her fingertips, so I subtly tested that, but I don't think she actually is. So what is going on? Why would her use change?

Could be lots of things, so probably best for her to see a GP if it’s bothering her.

Take her to the GP.

It's very likely to be something really common like mild arthritis. But there are some more unusual problems that start like this and really need catching early.

(I'm not a doctor. I have had relatives with the former and the latter)
