Elderly neighbour shouting to himself

Not a parent, but I thought this might be the best place to seem advice. My neighbour is late 70s and lives alone. Generally he copes okay but I do help him out with practical tasks occasionally, eg recent problem with his hot water, reading electric meter… however over the last few months I’ve heard him through the wall shouting to himself in the morning. Sometimes it’s just “AAAAAAGH” other times “SHUT UP, SHUT UP”. I don’t feel comfortable asking him about it but equally I wonder if he is okay? I do have experience of family members with dementia (though they didn’t shout), and wondered if this could be an early sign?

Do you hear any neighbourhood noise at these times?

I was wonder if it’s something as simple as he’s trying to have a lie in and someone starts mowing or something.
I have been known to shout “Fgs shut up” when the dog 2 doors down from us starts yapping again!
The 3 family members I’ve know with dementia didn’t/don’t yell but I know repetitive shouting can be a sign of advanced dementia.

I'd ask him how he is. I haven't got dementia or anything, and I live with others, but I frequently shout some expletives - particularly if I drop something, struggle with some item, etc.

was he listening to the radio? The PM often makes me want to shout.

Thanks for the replies! No I don’t think it’s a reaction to any other noise - he usually seems to be in his bathroom (which adjoins my bedroom). And it’s a very staccato, clipped “SHUT UP, SHUT UP”, almost like a repetitive chant. I chat to him a lot and he tells me loads about various ongoing physical medical issues but I don’t feel comfortable asking him about the shouting. I’m just a bit worried about his mental state. He had been a bit confused about a couple of other things recently so it got me wondering.
