My friend who is is a nursing home is 80 in October, and I'm struggling to think of how to celebrate it.
He'd hate a party, and I don't think it'd be safe for me to take him out somewhere. I've done it a couple of times and really struggled. He's a voracious reader and that's all he does. Running out of space for books!

My dad was 80 in February 2021 when we were in lockdown. Between us his 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren send him 80 wrapped presents. Most of them were very small and silly. He loved it and felt thoroughly appreciated.

If it's not safe for you to go out with him, could you talk to the Nursing Home about having lunch or Dinner with him there?

I bought my uncle a Kindle for his 90th. Would that work?

My DSis works in a care home and organised a team quiz for all the residents to take part in. It was actually for the queen’s jubilee and there was one round for each decade. Each round had about 6 or 7 questions based on that decade. Some of the questions were pictures e.g. identify this 1950s food product, and some questions were audio e.g. name this song/singer. They loved it. Could do something similar for 8 decades.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 26/08/2022 08:54

Forgot to add, they also had a buffet with food from each decade.

Or a really nice cake and have a mini afternoon tea with them. I think by 80 and living in a home it's more about your time with them than an actual present.

That's a great idea. Will have to make him come out of his room though!

The company I wanted to bake the cakes can't do it. So will get some big standard ones from Cost Co instead. Particularly wanted to use this company but they aren't available so standard will do.

I don't think he'd know how to use it. He can't use a phone anymore.

Check with the home and see what they do - my mum's home does a birthday party for every resident with cake and banners.

I always suggest the same thing but what about a photo blanket? You could choose photos of his favourite books?

Toddlerteaplease · 26/08/2022 13:26

Oo photo blanket is a great idea!

I agree with checking about the cake. Both ILs are in homes and both homes do them a lovely birthday cake Wink

How about organising a cream tea in the home. A bit different to a standard cake.
