Surrender Driving Licence

Hi all,

Asking here as it seems to be impossible to get through to the DVLA.

Just had my fathers 'driving licence renewal application'. How do I surrender the driving licence on his behalf? The form requires fathers signature which will not be possible due to capacity.

Thank you!

Do you have Power of Attorney? I do and wrote a note to explain why I was signing the document. After that I just crossed my fingers and hoped as like you I couldn’t speak to anyone to check. It took about 9 weeks to receive a response from DVLA but they have just written to acknowledge and accept the surrender. Even without LPOA a similar approach may work? GP’s can also withdraw the right to drive, if that was possible for you? Good luck

Thanks for that. Yes to LPA so I will do as you did. Did you send a copy of the LPA? Also, the written acknowledgement you got back - did it come to you, just checking as my fathers post redirection expires in the next month.

Sorry to hear this. Can you renew your father's post redirection? Be warned DVLA are months behind on correspondence due to staff shortages etc (COVID etc, usual excuses). I recently reapplied for my driving licence; it should have taken 2-3 weeks to come through, but took 3 months.

I have just got covid again! I've been kind of run down passed month or so before getting it I keep getting sores on my tongue got one on the side maybe half way up and two at the front and like a blister type on too anyone else had this while having covid? Or just get this a lot in general? Thanks

No I did not include a copy of the LPOA. The letter from DVLA was addressed to mum and came to her home, so you may need to extend the redirection to ensure you receive it.

mommaof1 - have you posted on the incorrect thread?

@LivinginaLegohouse Brill, thank you, you have been a great help. I still communicate with his previous neighbours and they get on well with the new neighbour so I'm sure someone will keep the letter. It's only 15 mins drive away so I can pick it up. It is the only letter gone through the redirection for months - I thought my Dad had surrendered his licence - clearly not! Thanks again.
