Paying for care home

After struggling for a long time. My parents are going for ‘respite’ for 2 weeks but possibly permanently.

dads in hospital and mums going in today.dad will join when he leaves hospital which is probably tomorrow.

they can self fund however I’m just looking for paperwork to deal with paying and the money is in a prudential account and the names listed are me and my sibling. It says it’s a flexible savings plan and our names are under a heading of Lives assured.

can I just contact them and draw money to pay for the care home fees? I have POA for both parents.

sorry if this seems garbled. I’m feeling like the worst daughter ever today.

I think you need to ring Prudential.

Life assurance pays out on the death of the person (who is called the “life assured”). Some allow you to withdraw early, but the sum you get is considerably reduced.

Speak to AgeUK as well. They are very helpful with advice around care homes and funding etc.

Care home funding is assessed on income and assets. I am not sure that a life insurance policy counts tbh. Age UK will give you lots of information.

Thank you x

You also need to speak to Social Services for advice and help.

Just an update - mum was in the care home for 4 weeks when dad was discharged and joined her.
He was adamant that they would continue to live in the care home and they’d sell the house to continue funding.

Unfortunately, dad had a massive stroke 3 weeks later and passed away.

Mum was in the care home awaiting a diagnosis for dementia, though the staff and us as a family were in no doubt that this was taking a grip of her.

She too passed away, peacefully earlier this month.
Losing her husband of 66 years was just heartbreaking and she was never the same again.

Im now knee deep in probate and paperwork and totally over faced.

I take comfort that mum and Dad are now together and free from the stresses of illness that plagued them in the latter years of their lives. 💔💔

So sorry. You’ve had a terrible time. Take your time with the paperwork. Yes some things need to be done relatively quickly, but everything doesn’t have to happen today. Give yourself breaks so you can cope with it.

I'm so sorry, you've had a hard year. There's a few posters in the Cockroach Cafe thread who are wading through probate forms at the moment, I did mine this time last year and still haven't filed the paperwork away.

Sorry to read your update OP. 😥
But comforting to know they're together.
Take care. Flowers

@Borntobeamum So sorry you are going through this.
Be really kind to yourself and if you are in the fortunate position of not having to do everything immediately, I'd say take a couple of weeks away from the sad-ministration/paper work/online forms. @Knotaknitter and some very helpful others posted some really helpful advice in the Cockroach cafe about a month ago. Worth ploughing back if you get a quiet moment
