My mum has butrans 5mg patches, they do help her arthritis pain and they are often used in carehomes for chronic pain. Why are you worried about addiction, his pain relief and comfort are the priorities.

5mg is a low dose, the patch stays on for 7 days, he may need extra painkillers on top until his pain is under control.

My mother is on butrans 10 for arthritis.
Initially it was 5 and after a few weeks it went up to 10. They do help with the pain.
The pain relief is needed to give them a better quality of life.

I was on them whilst awaiting hip replacement (arthritis) a couple of years ago. I was on the max dose which I think was 25 mg (had 2 patches to stick on)
Yes they helped but they were an absolute arse to come off after the op. The withdrawal was horrendous. And I can't remember much about the 18 months I was on them for...

Thankyou for your replies , yes it’s a low dose
have any of you had side effects ? While it’s the low dose does it effect driving ?

Morphine can affect driving if he is not used to it, see how he gets on with it and if it makes him feel any different then he can speak to his g.p. not everyone has side effects, he may get a bit constipated so should be aware of that.

You need to discuss with their GP or prescribing clinician

It's not uncommon to experience a bit of nausea, feeling sleepy snd constipation - but all of these things should be discussed with GP.

Please don't ask strangers on the internet.
