75 yo with suspected covid called ambulance as she hadn't been able to move to eat, drink or use the bathroom. Called ambulance but they won't take her in as it might be covid she needs to ride it out they said. 24 hour ago mobilising and doing all the usual, now can't do anything for herself. Ambulance have suggested getting carers in. Is this right? How do we even go about finding carers as an emergency.
Please help

That doesn't right although the ambulance service in our area is almost non existent. (Unconscious, unresponsive, shallow breathing, collapsed in a restaurant - wait at least 4 hours!) Have you contacted the GP? I've just read that again. She hasn't had a positive Covid test but they won't come?

Does she have anyone who can be with her and call the ambulance again? Or put her in the car and take her to A&E?

I'm sorry - I'm just asking loads of questions, not really helpful!

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 04/07/2022 11:46

Does she have anyone nearby who can help her? What sort of help does she need? Have you seen her?

Tried Social Services?

She would only get admitted if she was completely unable to mobilise/look after herself or if she was so unwell she needed treatment/tests/care that could only be given in hospital. Ambulance have been out and assessed her I take it?

DasGirl · 04/07/2022 11:47

Call the GP out, They can come and do a medical assessment and get emergency care in place for a few days while she recovers from whatever is causing this.
But if GP feels she needs hospital treatment elderly people can often be sent in directly to medical receiving unit rather than through A&E.

It sounds like the ambulance service don't think she is a medical emergency but rather needs someone to look after her at home while she gets over this illness. There's no point them taking her to A&E for her to sit there for 8 hours and then be sent home.
Has she had a covid test? That would give a result in 15 minutes

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon Flowers

Makes me think that people should just lie when asked if they have any covid symptoms, if this is the result of being honest ! It's a bit rich refusing to go in because covid but suggesting others do !

Can you call an emergency number, or have you already done that ?

Any relative/friend nearby who could bring food/fluids/help moving ? Even a neighbour maybe ?

75 yo with suspected covid called ambulance as she hadn't been able to move to eat, drink or use the bathroom.
When you say can't move to eat, do you mean can't move at all or can't get out of bed?
When did her bowels last move, has she had to urinate in bed? I'd be worried about her skin then. How long has she been like this?

INeedNewShoes · 04/07/2022 12:08

Why is it suspected that it's Covid?

It sounds more like a brain issue, potential stroke situation?

yikesanotherbooboo · 04/07/2022 12:11

Contact their GP first of all. If no luck, 111.Ideally be with them whilst you do it if they are able to give consent. What proof for Covid-19?

NameChange200000 · 04/07/2022 13:13

Yes she can't get herself out of the bed she's urinated in it not been able to sit up to drink etc. the ambulance team said she doesn't need medical treatment. Numerous family members have been around her that then tested positive.

Her GP for the health aspect and adult social service for emergency carers.

Does she have spare key holder / key safe?

DasGirl · 04/07/2022 13:27

So have any of the numerous family members who've been around her now recovered from covid?
Can they go and help her for a few days until she feels better? Can anyone stay overnight? Can they take her round a covid test?

Contact the district nurse based at her health centre to get a commode for by her bedside

lljkk · 04/07/2022 14:59

Even without covid, does she usually lack mobiIity?
Phone local council to ask about emergency at-home carers.

Can someone help her toilet in her chair/bed next time?

NameChange200000 · 04/07/2022 17:16

No she can get around usually. She won't take a covid test.
The ambulance made some referrals apparently for emergency care but said it will be a few days before they get in contact. Family members have still got covid so can't go to help.

Please call Adult Social Services.

My mum had a fall and was taken to hospital.
After eight days she was deemed fit to go home. However, I had a phone call to say that someone on her ward ( whether a staff member or patient) had Covid.

My mum couldn't go home but Adult Social Services have a Covid Team who attend , for around 10 days, to help patients when they go home. So my mum went home and had Covid Carers to attend her. I was there when she came home.
The team were fantastic.

Your hospital should have engaged this team.
Try Adult Social Services.
