Sorry writing as walking the dog.. Decision will be made today about what treatment and whether to operate...

My mum had hers pinned, but it's major surgery. I'm sorry about your mum.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 26/05/2022 08:42

Does she have any conditions that would make an operation risky - eg heart failure? I am not a clinician so sort of bumping for you, but I believe there is a strong onus on an operation to repair or replace the hip if at all possible.

How did the aftercare go, how soon was she mobile please?

My mother did hers a few years ago and it was still a dynamic hip screw that was used.

CornishPorsche · 26/05/2022 08:45

My mum is a lot younger than yours, but her post op saw her on her feet I think the next day. Unfortunately she refused to do the physio afterwards so still hobbles, but she's had multiple breaks in her legs, plus a hip replacement, plus is waiting for a knee replacement so it's not straight forward for her.

Lacedwithgrace · 26/05/2022 08:49

Not an expert, just cared for someone with the same injury. I think the treatment depends on how exactly it's broken. Either way, it's major surgery and if she's already unwell it may not be possible. The healing process is around 6 weeks, plus physio etc. That also depends on her health and mobility

It's complicated but my Dad is terminal with cancer so we can't put a charge on the house and their 25k won't last long... We are /were in the process of trying to find a home where SS will

Cover most of the cost.. Obviously now they will have to reassess her to see if she can move... It's so stressful..

No heart failure...

Can I ask how long she will be in hospital for approx please?

OP posts:
Marylou62 · 26/05/2022 11:30

I'm sorry.. What a stupid question.. She's in theatre as we speak and my DF wants to cancel the previous care home.. I've told him that until we know how long she'll be in and whether the new home will take her we've got to wait.. Google imformation is quite old.. So what I'm asking (whilst juggling work, calls from EVERYONE, trying to just eat and get a cup of tea and pack for the 250 mile journey tomorrow to take my Dad to see her etcetc) is... How long were your relatives in hospital for please... I'm exhausted, sad, and so b*dy stressed... Thank you for letting me let off steam...

I'm sorry but you'll need to speak to your mums hospital. My mum was out in under 48hrs, but she isn't cognitively impaired or in need of long term care. Your mum could be out to a care home in a few days or it might take weeks to get her a suitable place.

I wish you the best, you are clearly under a lot of pressure.

KangarooKenny · 26/05/2022 12:14

Out next day here.

Marylou62 · 26/05/2022 12:16

Thanks Cornish.. Are you by any chance in Cornwall..? I'm north Cornwall.. Yes awaiting a call.. And I've told him that she could be out in days...

Thanks... She was very mobile before her fall.. My Dad is very worried about money and thinks by cancelling the old care home (before the £3000+ bill for the next 2 weeks!! ) the hospital will have to find her somewhere.. OK in principle but what about mum stuck in the hospital... It's awful.. I'm waiting for both SS and the manager of the future home to call me back..

nokitchen · 26/05/2022 16:10

I'd really advise to not cancel a care home place with the expectations of the hospital finding somewhere. My brother has just waited nearly 7 weeks living in hospital for a place in a care home to be found for him. It was excruciating for him.

lljkk · 26/05/2022 20:51

100% agree with nokitchen.

Bedblocking is only worse now than it was before.

Marylou62 · 27/05/2022 07:04

Oh yes.. I totally agree with both of you.. I talked him round saying exactly that... I do understand his worries.. Money is getting very tight...
She had the ball of her femur replaced yesterday and it went well... Going to drive up today and take Dad (who is partially sighted, in heart failure and has rampant prostate cancer so unfortunately wets himself -) to visit her.. They will allow me in with him.. There's usually only one visitor at a time.. Hopefully were my daughter will video call them with some brilliant news.. Their first Great Grandchild is due in February! I'm going to be a Grandma.... Cried when she told me..) Thank you everyone

Grab and talk to the hospital social services staff when you are there. She may be moved to a rehab hospital after the op; even if not she will be assessed before discharge and may go to a residential home for a few weeks rehab, which is funded. Did you say they only have 24k savings? So she would qualify for funding for her care? Apologies, you may be on top of this already, but I would get a better picture of what next before cancelling or committing to the care home place. It may be a month or two before she is well enough to get back there.

I’m so sorry, what a very difficult time for you and for your dad.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 27/05/2022 07:17

Oh and congratulations on the baby!

Exactly what I did today! Thank you so much.. She's going to rehab so we cancelled the care home and as it was still respite we only need to pay for 3 - 4 days... Dad is very poorly and won't go visit tonight but hopefully tomorrow... I'm going with my brother as we have an appointment with the ward manager who is going to chat about her ongoing care.. Can't thank you all enough for listening when I was in complete despair..
