What is the life expectancy for someone who is:
Female
90 years old
Has chronic heart failure
Edema
Sits in a chair all day, doesn't go to bed, feeds herself and watches TV and sleeps more than she is awake.
Lives alone.
Carers in twice a day other than that family come and do shopping, cleaning etc.
I'm so tired doing this for 5 years, if there are another 5 ahead I don't think I will survive.

No point asking doctor or PHN as they have been useless to date

Does she get Attendance Allowance? If not, apply for it and use it to hire a cleaner, and someone to collect shopping.

if she’s in a chair all day, she’s in danger of pressure sores. It sounds as if she needs carers more than twice a day.

There should be something that can be done about the edema, but it depends on tablets being taken regularly. Easier to control in a care home setting

What’s PHN? Googling just gives me postherpetic neuralgia Grin

Thanks for your reply.
It's public health nurse. She changes the bandages.
BIL refuses to discuss care home.
But she really needs one.
I pulled back with my helping (was going one full day and two days after work).

There is no way anyone can tell you how long she will live. If she only has 2 care calls a day she is obviously able to get herself to the toilet and get food as needed so sounds like she is fairly independent.
Rather than wish she is not there, as previous poster said, you need to decide what you are happy to do and out source the rest. Housework can easily be bought in once a week. Shipping could be done on line. She could pay for daily hot meal delivery and not need that much shopping on top of that. The care agency will normally shop if asked or could put the shopping away if you ordered it on line.

My Mum, mid-late 70s, lasted 2-3 years bouncing in and out of hospital with episodes of fluid on the lungs, but she had diabetes and ever-crappier kidneys.

The progression is quite random, which is why the medics won't be drawn. If you're lucky and avoid infections or respond well to treatment, you can rumble on for quite a while - as you know ....
The treatment for fluid on the lungs isn't great for the kidneys and if your kidneys proper fail then you're a goner, but there can be quite a lot of in-between before it comes to that...

No one can say for sure obviously but the Office of National Statistics tells you that:

UK life expectancy at age 90 years was 4.0 years for males and 4.6 years for females in 2018 to 2020.
