Washable sandals for a doubly incontinent DM?

Hi. Just spoken to a lady at DM's care home and she's asked me to buy some washable slippers for my DM as they have had to wash her sandals so often they've fallen to bits (only took them in just over 2 months ago!).

DM hates wearing shoes/slippers as she gets very hot feet so I'm trying to find a pair of comfortable fully washable sandals for her. As she is doubly incontinent it would be good to get a few pairs so she's always got a clean pair to hand. She likes the type of sandal with a strap over the toes and a strap at the ankle - velcro fastening. As she has dementia, it's best to try to get her something close to what she knows.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Not found anything suitable yet via Google - need to be able to wash the whole sandal not just the insole.

Just to point out too that neither family nor carers have managed to get her to wear incontinence pads. She is VERY stubborn!!

Thanks in advance Smile

Try looking at walking sandals. The webbing type will be washable. Also how about Crocs? Could she try those?

LunaHardy · 25/02/2022 15:16

My thought was also crocs!

Google says that both Keen and Hotter have machine washable sandals which are both that style of sandal you’re looking for

Teva Tirra are washable and very sturdy. They have the adjustable velcro across and at the ankle.

Would she like these OP? I bought a pair in an emergency and they're so comfortable.

From a foot health point of view most of my patients swear by Cozyfeet slippers. They arent cheap, but they wash well and last.

Reef sandals are designed to get wet so they might be a good bet.

CMOTDibbler · 25/02/2022 15:25

They are slippers, but double velcro straps and open toe/upper, so maybe these might work? My dad had Sandpiper slippers as his shoes all the time for years and his got washed a lot too and survived well

How about crocks, they have sandals and clogs which are cool and washable.

The other option is Jelly Sandals - try Amazon

FavouritePi · 25/02/2022 15:27

I'd second a croc type of shoe as it's breathable, comfy but equally washable. We used them for when my DD was potty training and they got washed often. They also do different styles now.

I wear these sandals in the water, they are designed for watersports/activity

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I like the crocs idea but couldn't find any in the right style that she would manage to get on easily (she's 88).

Hotter - you have to reove the insoles before washing so they wouldn't be any use.

Keen - might be ok though they require a gentle wash with gentle detergent so I'm not sure they'll take the hammering the care home needs to give them.

There are some other possibilities on the JD website that are very good value so maybe the solution is to have a few pairs of those even if they don't last very long....

Thanks for all the extra suggestions - I'm going to continue looking through them over the weekend as have to do some work now unfortunately! Lots of great ideas anyway so I'm sure I'll find something. Will report back when sorted....

Can’t help with the sandals issue but have another idea for you…

Re: the incontinence pads - completely understand why she won’t wear them (bulky and awful) but have you considered ‘period pants’?

The Tena pants etc do feel a bit like like adult nappies (although much better than pads), and are obviously disposable so she probably wouldn’t want to wear anything like that and they would work out expensive too but my friend has a leaky bladder and has been wearing period pants. They look and feel like normal underwear and are obviously washable too. There lots of different brands (might be worth asking on a board here for suggestions) but she gets them from Primark.

These are for kids but should have her size.

All of these Hotter shoes are machine washable:

There are also lots on Amazon if you type in machine washable shoes.

Crocs banned in DM's care home as trip hazard.
We have gone with Skechers but might not totally meet her 'sandal' brief but most of staff wear the same ones.
