Elderly parents

How to deal with "not being in when the carers arrive"

Elderly Uncle with Dementia but fully mobile and in denial

Goes out when the carers are due then rings me to complain they haven't been to give him his medicine

His medicine is now in a locked box because he was both forgetting to take it and taking it every time he noticed it (both over and under dosing)

So the carers wont leave his meds out for him
I live 2hrs plus away from him

What do I do or suggest to ensure he gets his meds every day

Could you maybe reschedule the carers for early in the morning before he has a chance to go out? I know how difficult it is, I cared for my Dad with dementia for several years, but he wasn't independently mobile, so never had this exact problem. All best wishes.

Could they leave out 1 dose when they come?

KatyMac · 21/02/2022 13:37

They won't leave it out as its a risk

Ask the carers to change the time of their visit. Speak to the g.p for a medication review to see what is essential only and can they be taken any time of the day.

KatyMac · 21/02/2022 14:19

They cant/wont leave the meds out as they are responsible for him taking them

They cant/wont change his time as presumably they have other people to visit and to be fair whilst annoying his problems arent life threatening like I assume some of the other people the carers visit are (or incontinent/cant get out of bed without help etc)

I'd agree about getting in touch with the GP. Is there a time of day that should work better - last visit?

countrygirl99 · 21/02/2022 14:25

Have you tried a pivotell. The carers would need to fill it but it sounds an alarm to remind it's due and only allows 1 dose.

KatyMac · 21/02/2022 14:29

He has 2 visits morning and evening with meds at each visit - it was set up with the GP and community pharmacist

I can get in touch again I guess

I'll look at the pivotel - he has a dosiset atm but that didnt help as he doesnt know what day of the week it is

What time do they come (approx)? Is it just once a day?

RandomMess · 21/02/2022 14:42

He needs reassessing as the care provided isn't suitable for his needs Sad

raffle · 21/02/2022 14:48

He needs a carousel. No way to OD with one unless he saves up loads and remembers where he’s hidden them.

FunnyGoingsOn · 21/02/2022 15:11

Will he take phone calls from you? Is he prepared to be told by you when to take medication?
Does he have Wi-fi? Can you set up cameras and or door sensors so you know when he is in or out?
What about setting up Amazon echo?

BlanketsBanned · 21/02/2022 15:31

If he has no idea what day it is and is that disorientated is he safe to be going outside on his own, has he had a full risk assessment.

Polyanthus2 · 21/02/2022 16:02

What is the medicine. Perhaps it's not vital.

KatyMac · 21/02/2022 16:53

He is diabetic, has a heart condition, stating and his alzeimers meds

I think he does need reassessing but social services are not very helpful

I think a home is the only option now and we need to hurry up and get it sorted

I wanted him to have his freedom but I'm guessing I'm doing it all wrong

The homes never ring us back, we can't visit to see what they are like

I would ask the gp to re-assess him and encourage the carers to speak to their manager and get a care needs and capacity assessment done

KatyMac · 21/02/2022 22:49

Yes I'll speak to them again about it

Thanks everyone
