Smartphone for non tech savvy Dad, 77

Can anyone recommend a smartphone for my Dad. It seems to be down to me to source and choose it.
He will only use text, call and WhatsApp.
Maybe Google maps.
He has a small 4"smartphone. It's really old and won't install whattsapp.
He has large slightly uncoordinated fingers so I think a large screen would be good.
I am thinking that he will be able to use WhatsApp web on his computer, if I install whattsapp on his phone.
Will also be able to video call.

The Motorola e7 is quite basic - my DH has got one. It's got the usual raft of apps but it would easily enough to take off the ones your DF doesn't want. They do one that's even more basic but when we were looking into it, the reviews suggested it was worth paying an extra £10 - £20 for the e7 in terms of the phone's responsiveness and so on. The camera seems v. good for the price.

Forgot to add the screen is 6.2 inches and plenty big enough for my husband (he's nearly 60 and uses reading glasses).

What computer has he got? We've found that the oldies have taken really well to iPhones as they use iPads.

Have you seen the Doro range?

They are designed to be very easy to use, with massive icons and not too many features.
They're basically designed for older people.

OP I hope you don't mind me hopping on the thread

The Doro and the E7, will they constantly be asking the user to update etc? Or go obsolete? Mum has a tablet that barely works now but she wants something simple that won't badger her.

I can barely cope with an Iphone, she will hate it.

I have no idea what the proper name is but my mum finds one of those dibber things much easier than her fingers. But she also found the whole smartphone experience easier once she mastered the expand finger movement so she could make things bigger.

I think it's stylus. Mum and I both use those.

Purplewithred · 21/02/2021 19:32

MIL by far prefers her iPhone to the doro which she hated.

I'd go for that or whatever the most standard android brand is if you are android users. make sure you buy something you know how to use - DH is android, I'm iPhone, I do all the training and setting up for MILs phone.

She uses a stylus for everything, it made all the difference.

My husband only recently got his E7 so hard to comment on the obsolescence. It seems to do its own updates as long as it's plugged in.

LApprentir

Thanks. I find the ipad updates so annoying, they like to bugger up settings etc

Mum's old Samsung doesn't seem to ever do this but we were told a newer Samsung would.

Sorry, I just hate tech constantly changing. If mum gets a new one that does that, she'll never cope.

A stylus is a good idea.
He has no mobile reception at home, so the phone at the moment is only for emergencies when out.
His laptop is windows.
Thanks for suggestions. I will research.

It's a bit of a leap, but I've found the whole idea of 'Alexa' and a smart speaker very acceptable to the oldies in my life.

They are happy to ah e Alexa turn their lights on and off. It can be connected to a phone.

Just a thought. Hope you find what works.
