Good shoes for swollen feet

I'm looking for some shoes to buy online for dparent - they need to be fairly wide for swollen feet. Does anyone have any recommendations - I know buying a pair of shoes should be a fairly straightforward exercise (!) but if anyone has any tips about what to look out for I would be most grateful! do you go up a size or does that not really help (swelling means feet are wider rather than longer!)

Birkenstock you might know the sandals, they also do shoes.
Not cheap but well made.

Hobos easy fit canvas if what elderly fil wears. The Velcro allows for swelling. He wears a size bigger than he did as a younger man.

How swollen? Male or female? Try DB wider fit shoes and go for something with laces or velcro, with a low opening for extra adjustment - avoid court shoes/Mary Jane types (swelling just pools in the opening) a full show without fussy seams etc is best www.widerfitshoes.co.uk/ (I'm a foot HCP)

Thanks Sean - I hadn't thought of Birkenstocks! I'm thinking it may be worth investing in something reasonably pricey - more comfortable shoes = more walking around, which has got to be good.

Ah - I cross posted - thanks so much for all the new replies! Yes, I should have said - it is for dm, though the canvas shoes will work for both, of course! What a good point about the MJs causing the swelling to pool, I wouldn't have thought of that.

Definitely looking for velcro (although I've noticed it can lose its stick after a while, but perhaps that's inevitable and you just have to replace them).

What do we think of these?

(though obviously not when it's raining! But I doubt if dm would be doing much walking in a storm anyway)

Ambrose Wilson online. Everything you could possibly need that an older person might like/need.
Be careful with Birkenstock's as the foot is not secure in the shoe. They could have a fall as a result.

CosyFeet... their telephone service is usually very helpful too.

My DP got slippers from easy Life. They have a proper sole. Both the heel and top have fasteners so the shoe basically unfolds to step into and you fasten it around the swollen foot. If you join up you get 15% off code.

Another suggestion for you
wider fit shoes - fitting

Something like the shoe you selected

@Bobojangles Really sorry - I missed that you had posted this already.

My dad had terribly swollen feet, and he had a number of pairs of Cosyfeet, and they were great. Its important that the shoes are soft but secure on the foot so that they aren't a trip hazard (with the swelling your sense of where your foot is impaired and its harder to pick your toes up properly) or going to dig in as the swelling changes over the day. Its also good if its a shoe that can be worn all day so they aren't wearing insecure/unsupportive slippers, esp with the temptation to pop to the bin wearing them.

So many helpful ideas here - thanks so much all! Now I can't decide between them....
Now to play 'guess the size' as well!

My dad has swollen feet diabetes & Odema
Highly recommend cosy feet
I think you can get the VAT taken off as well If they suffer from a chronic long term illness or disability.

My dad is a size 10.5 and I just get a size 11
They also do extenders which means even if the Velcro isn’t wide enough you can use the extender to make it wider .
They also do ones that are Velcro at the back around the heel and across the front

I think you can get the VAT taken off as well If they suffer from a chronic long term illness or disability. Yes, you can, and they've made it easier - just a box on the checkout rather than a separate form. I think oedema is listed as a qualifying condition, without the need to specify what's causing it.
