My mum needs a commode as the journey to the toilet is exhausting her at night, she’s asthmatic and is refusing an overnight carer. The occupational therapist and palliative care nurses have ordered her a nhs commode. Which she is now accepting as something that could make her nights better. Will the NHS one be any good? Am I better off ordering her a non nhs one. Will she be safe using this on her own in her bedroom safely? Wondering if it will be stable enough as she’s not very strong at the moment. Does anyone have any wisdom to share? Please let me know if you’ve bought one that’s good. Many thanks

I’m an OT. The one the occupational therapist orders will be very good. Equipment loans stores look very hard into which bit of equipment does the job best.

The one given to my sister was a basic metal one which didn't look very glamourous but was very stable.

Hi Angel, my mother is similar. She has a wicker chair type so it looks like a chair when not a commode. Bought privately from local disability store. It is very stable and we've used this style for many years now (Confused)

Thank you for starting this thread, I think this is something my elderly mum could do with, I am going to suggest it to her. She too is completely exhausted from going to the toilet multiple times at night.

You can also get a commode type frame which sits over the loo. Doesn't help with the night trips but much more stable and easier to get up from (higher arms etc)
Can't help on the night commode as recent experience is outside NHS but it reminded me a bit of the rather basic IKEA high chairs you see everywhere. Cost about £10. It's only when you start to use them that you realise they are so easy to clean, have no unnecessary fripperies etc. So the NHS choice will probably be made for similar reasons.

Everything we've had supplied by NHS/OT has been very strong and stable, albeit not very pretty.

The commode has arrived. It is indeed not pretty, but very stable and my mums used it once already and it’s made a big difference . I’ve bought some commode liners off amazon so I’m all set. Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated & im very glad I didn’t spend £150 on one off the internet !!
