My mother has used computers, smartphones etc for many years - she had an iphone years before I did - but now various factors have converged to make it difficult for her to manage passwords.
The current state of affairs means she's often tied up for hours resetting passwords every time she needs to use an app or do online banking. She regularly gets locked out of online banking because she inputs too many passwords.
Firefox Lockwise works fine for me but not for her. I can't figure out why it isn't storing most of her passwords. Last time her details were changed I logged her in and out of her account on her iphone and her laptop and the details were correct and appeared to be saved, now somehow the old log in details are autofilled.
Can anyone offer a solution? Some kind of easy to use app? I'm at my wits end with this.

A simple old fashioned address book? My passwords are all in there alphabetically as I have also had issues with autofill apps messing up. Especially safari autofill sometimes! I always think if I got burgled that there’s no way they’d be interested in an address book so a relatively safe option for storing passwords. I think the only issue is she would manually have to type the password in so could that be problematic?

I’m not really tech savvy but hopefully someone will be along with a better idea than mine!!

I use LastPass.

One “master” password and it stores every login and password. When go to new site you click lastpass logo and it remembers. Can also create very secure passwords, but you don’t need to remember as long as you have you master password. Highly recommend.

I have this problem big time with my mother. She writes them in an address book but it still goes wrong somehow. She isn’t tech savvy and doesn’t always get the difference between username, password, passcode even email address! Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any easy answer

I use Lastpass but it isn't perfect, especially on my phone. Once a password is properly stored in it it's great but changing them and storing new ones sometimes gets messy (I use it to generate strong random ones but they don't always save properly).

For better or worse I feel a little better just knowing other people are having issues with this. I'll try LastPass, I wonder if they offer an option for syncing the laptop with the phone.
I'm not ultra tech savvy myself but the Firefox keychain seems to work really well for me, it offers the option of the most recent password, plus previous ones and the dates they were changed, it can handle more than one user on one device etc. My mother's password problem on the other hand is like a swirling vortex of chaos, I can't keep up with the catalogue of things that go wrong.

Mum has a code system in her address book
DH has a password protected spreadsheet

I use a system that helps me figure out the password

First few letters are related to the website
Then a date code I'll remember
Then another couple of letters could be initials
So for banking
HSBC021020Yd
For mumsnet
MUM021020yd

They are always the same but completely different. If a special character is required then keep it the same and in the same place
Mum02!020yd

We set up a system for my mam which is using the first few letters of the site followed her her NI number. I realise this isn't hugely secure but then she doesn't really use any secure websites it's mostly email and similar things. She still doesn't remember them (beginnings of dementia) but we can remind her of the 'system' to help her.

Maybe we should be looking into one of the master password controllers for her, though...

youdid blimey that is very organised. My mum changes her usernames and passwords at the drop of a hat so I think we need a more fluid system.

I just managed to log in for her and now her details are on my laptop so I may remind her of that next time.

apapuchi I do something similar with my own passwords, it is very useful to have a sort of system.

I used to have a sort of system but I ended up with so many variations that they weren't very secure and I couldn't remember them all, worst of both worlds. I am patiently changing them all to random Lastpass ones, it is great for syncing between Apple phone and Windows laptop.

If you are signed into your Google account and using Chrome, it has a built in password manager - give that's quick go to see if it would suit your Mum.
I use Keepass as well but in your situation would have a look at chrome/Google first.

I use LastPass because it's what my colleagues all use for the server farms st work. I'm reasonable tech savvy and find, as PP says, it's doesn't always work quite perfectly. It's certainly good at what it does, and tries to be helpful.

Sometimes, for example, the sites url is different when you set up a password to that when you log in, so that LastPass needs a bit of a helping hand.

I also use it to keep secure notes about myself, simple things like passport number, NI number and bank accounts. All good.

Lalalatte · 08/10/2020 13:29

Mine has the same problem, I suggested I make a note of them on a secure spreadsheet but this fell on deaf ears unfortunately.

I set my parents up with a notebook by the computer, but Google can save and auto fill passwords.
