Father dementia bad heart urinary incontinence at night

Dad has vascular dementia (good days and bad days). He lives with mum who is tired frustrated and struggling to cope from time to time. They have Carers in twice a day and he wears incontinence pads. He’s ok during the day but he pees loads at night and wets their kingsize beds more nights than he doesn’t. Sometimes he wakes up and goes to the toilet or wees in a wee container thing but sometimes he does this and it still comes through the incontinence pants and so wets the bed. They have a Kylie sheet but he is weeing right through that.
Any top tips gratefully received. My mum has asked the GP if any medication could be causing it and has been told his heart medication might be but he can’t come off it.

Ask the nurse to prescribe a trial of Conveen urinary sheaths.

Also get a referral to the Continence Advisory Service in your area - your GP should already have done this but GPs are sometimes quite crap at getting you through to these services. Google "continence advisory" + your area and call them directly if you encounter resistance.

Thanks. He has seen the continence service.

My mum has asked the GP if any medication could be causing it and has been told his heart medication might be but he can’t come off it. If it's heart medication, it may be a diuretic they're referring to, to ensure water comes out of the body via the normal route and doesn't pool up in the legs as oedema. If that's the case, see what time the diuretic is being taken, and if it's in the evening, see if it could be taken first thing in the morning instead.

Has he tried pants rather than the pads? They can be £££ and are not provided free in my area by my late father got on with the Wilko own brand ones which are (as far as I can tell) unisex and cheaper than Tena, boots and some supermarket brands.

I second taking the water tablets ( or any tablet containing a diuretic ) during the day . Mil (96) was getting up 2 or 3 times during the night and we were worried she would fall and she was getting very tired.
She now takes them with her lunch , they take an hour to start working and she is free by late afternoon .
