Incontinence support, removing urine smell from carpets

My mum's had incontinence a few years, at night gets up to change her pads 2/3 times. Since coming out of hospital after a fall her incontinence has got worse and she is changing pads up to 6 times a night. The incontinence nurse is looking at better pads which hold more but she's started to have accidents at night.
For her bed she was washable incontinence pads but as she gets up at night to change her pads she's set the floor a few times. I've used her Vax to clean the carpet but there is still an odour
Can anybody recommend any products to clean the carpet but mainly reduce the odour?
She is now using puppy pads on the floor by her bed to prevent future spills but I want to get rid of the smell.
Pre hospital we had planned to get new carpets but not sure it's the right time until we get some help with the nightime incontinence

Try baking soda sprinkled liberally and left for a long while before hoovering back up. Hope a better solution is found soon

Oooh ok thanks didn't think of that
Ive got plenty of bicarb, that's the same isn't it?

My Mother had a similar problem but more usually on the settee or chair although the carpet did get ‘dribbled’ on fairly regularly. I had a bit of success using Bissell Spot Pet Lifter, brushing it well in, leaving it for 24 hours and then using a pet formula shampoo in a Vax to remove it. It did eventually leave some faded patches on the carpet but did usually get rid of the smell.

It’s a hard time that you never really expect, dealing with these things. Good luck and respect to you.

Thank you estuary, you are right you never expect to deal with this at all, thanks for your kindness,

I didn't think of pet products

I would use a pet urine enzyme spray designed to break down urine molecules. Look in the pet shop

As above. Pets at home or amazon sell an stain and odour remover called simple solution. IT WORKS!! Flood the are that smells. Treat again if there is any residual smell (only happens if you've missed a bit). Works brilliantly on vomit too.

You need an enzyme-based cleaner.

nationalincontinence.com/pages/removeurine

The brands here may be American...

Maybe try the Pro-Kleen and Taylor McClure products from AmazonUK?

Pet urine cleaner/deodorisers will work too, as long as they are enzyme based.

Take up the carpet though - and put down tiles. Your underlay and wood floors underneath are going to get soaked eventually.

Thank you pixie, really appreciate all responses

For dog and child related similar incidents I've just diluted biological washing powder followed by diluted zoflora. I think you need the combination of enzymes to break down biological products plus anti bacterials. Has worked well for me.

MrsFrostyTheSnowman · 14/12/2019 22:38

Wow thank you all so much, I didn't know where to start. Thanks all. I'll get to the shops tomorrow

@mathanxiety the carpets will go, they were already due to be replaced but I'll hang on until the incontinence nurse has sorted us out. Didn't think of Maybe getting tiles instead

I'd second Simple Solution. You can get huge bottles of it on Amazon if you don't have a convenient pet shop.

Bicarb = bicarbonate of soda (sodium bicarbonate) = baking soda. Mixed with cream of tartar it makes baking powder.

There’s a rug doctor urine cleaner you can buy in anywhere you can rent the machines (but you don’t need to rent the machine to use the spray if that makes sense) x
