GPS tracker keyring

Hi, can anyone recommend a GPS tracker keyring for someone with dementia? My mum has started wandering and I think something like this would give us some peace of mind. I'm looking for a keyring one, as she never forgets to take her keys with her when she goes out, whereas there's no guarantee she would wear a watch, etc

I clicked on this thinking you'd found one..

The standard telecare GPS devices tend to be like a heavy old style Nokia , needing charging up daily and putting into persons handbag or coat pocket. (hard to get the right or only coat) . Biggest problems are ensuring person is likely to take it when they go out, but also how to charge it regularly as well (so that it's not elsewhere on charge when they go out).

If person is likely to take a smart mobile with them you can put a "find my location" app on it (with their permission unless lack capacity)
A key ring one would be fab but may be heavy - hope someone can find you one
Apparently there are shoe insert ones you can get on internet. Curious how they get charged? None I've ever known from LA funded telecare services are that small or long charge lasting

I think the smaller tracking items are more likely to be in spyware categories

Unforgettable.org is a good website for all things relating to dementia. They sell this tracker, but as already said, it needs charging.

I haven't got a reference, but there are little disc shaped ones available which can be fastened into someone's shoe - presumably they could be fastened on to a key ring. I was interested because they were small enough to track my cat (no, she doesn't wear shoes).

It as our Council's carers support group where I found out about this - see if your Council has a similar group, the coordinator would know about this.

I saw them at B&M bargains yesterday. You connect them to an app on your phone. No idea how long the charge works though

Not especially marketed for dementia ... but I use theTileApp. If there is already broadband WiFi these could be attached these to her key ring and anything else such as a jacket.

You could track in your phone from anywhere with WiFi.

The tile have batteries which are supposed to last twelve menorahs, in my experience it's closer to fifteen months.

There are a lot of really great clever devices out there- it's boggling knowing which to choose - also falls alarm, home safety elements to them - and these days v compact , discreet and easy to use. I wouldn't advise you do the choosing, they aren't all brilliant - ask local social care /gp for referral to Occupational therapy for 'telecare' and they will have at least a few professionals who are speciallists in this complex area of care.
It's likely they will have other helpful advice which could make a positive difference too. Most probably you won't have to buy it either as everyone with a disability has a legal right to maintain what ever level of independence is fair for them.
Good luck!

rachael12345 In ours and neighbouring local authorities, OT s arent the experts in telecare at all. .See up thread, our L.A. which is far ahead with telecare, doesn't provide such small GPS devices nor with huge longevity of charge, (although maybe in future that may happen) Other PPs have found such devices online. You would pay privately, unless the L.A. provided it.

I put an old phone in my mum's bag with a £5 per month sim card and used find my phone to keep an eye on her. We were living very nearby and we would run out and look for her when the phone location showed she'd gone out on her own. It did work but it's very stressful and not something I'd want to be doing long term. My mum was deep into alzheimer's by this stage though. It could be useful in the earlier stage of the illness.

The UBEEQUEE ZEN tracker is made specifically for people with dementia. It's really lightweight and can easily be attached to a set of keys or necklace etc. It has real time tracking and you can also look at historical activity (so you can notice any patterns in their wandering). You can also create a 'virtual fence' so that you get notified via the app anytime they leave a certain area e.g. their house. It can also have a call function so that you can ring each other if necessary. It's very reasonably priced and has UK customer support which we found very helpful. Worth it just for the peace of mind :)

Don't buy one of these

Massey7466 · 11/12/2021 14:20

Purchased this in a lightening deal thought it was decent. However once I received it and charged it placed it on the dogs collar. It would not configure or work correctly. Asked for help it still wouldn't work. By the end of the 5th day requested a return and refund. Tried it with 3 different phones. Returned to the seller after they wanted me to pay returns postage, again Amazon had to step in and make them send a prepaid return because it was faulty. Returned and awaited refund. Again after a month no refund so Amazon had to get involved. Now after 8 months in having to chance the refund of the subscription which they continued to take after the unit was returned! It may be only £26.94 they've taken without authority they've promised to return the money 3 separate months. I would never use this company or any of their products. Be careful and check for unauthorised payments from your bank if you have returned the tracker.
I would never trust this company they've lied and cheated me out of money and still promising to refund but never do.

An update
This company took 5 payments and promised to refund. I received 4 so yet again more lies. I would urge people to consider when purchasing from this company, there are many other options out on the market and I'm now using Vodafone curve pet at least they seem to be a reputable company. Unlike UBEEQUEE who seem to find the most simple of tasks difficult. I hope the directors get to see this!

They seem to not care about customer care, breaking promises seems to be the default

Yes checked with Bank and they have not processed all refunds as promised. I would not ever recommend this company. It's only a young company opened in 2019 you would have thought customer satisfaction would be paramount. No they don't answer emails but seem to answer these reviews. Perhaps they need to go back to customer service school and stop taking people's money then when found out return it promptly.

Please, if you're looking for a pet person tracker then take a look for Vodafone Curve, cheaper subscription uses 3 and 4g network again works all over the world wherever there's a cell signal.
